Washington is unhappy with Belgrade’s new choice of spy chief and intends to suspend intelligence cooperation until Serbia rethinks its “personnel solutions,” local CNN affiliate N1 claimed on Friday, citing unnamed diplomatic sources.
Aleksandar Vulin was named head of the Security and Intelligence Agency (BIA) in early December. He was previously in charge of the Interior Ministry, but swapped places with former BIA head Bratislav Gasic as part of a cabinet reshuffle.
According N1, the US has signaled to Serbia repeatedly that it disapproved of the appointment, most recently at a meeting between US Ambassador Christopher Hill and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic last week.
“Reliable sources” told the outlet that Hill threatened a “deep freeze” in cooperation between the BIA and the US intelligence community, noting that Vulin presented a “major problem” for Washington.
Hill allegedly told Dacic that the US would prefer to collaborate with the Interior Ministry instead, to which Dacic reportedly replied he would arrange for Gasic to visit Washington soon.
The CNN affiliate claims the US considers Vulin pro-Russian. As evidence, N1 pointed to Vulin’s multiple meetings with Nikolay Patrushev, the secretary of Russia’s national security council, while he was in charge of the police. They also brought up the accusations by Russian opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza that Vulin had him wiretapped on Moscow’s behalf. Vulin has denied the allegations and said he would sue Kara-Murza for libel.
Following Hill’s meeting with Dacic last week, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic made a cryptic remark about Belgrade crawling with spies, calling the Serbian capital “the new Casablanca,” in reference to the famous WWII Hollywood movie.
I can confirm that this is true. I lived in Belgrade in 2012-2013, and these people will just come up and start talking to you at bars. Like, I don’t even think I was specifically being targeted – I wasn’t really famous at the time. I just know what spies look like. At least the obvious ones – they have a series of questions they ask, and a very specific psychology-based technique of trying to seem likable.
These people should be kicked out of Serbia and replaced with the Russian military. When this party really gets started, and the Ukraine war spreads outside of the Ukraine, Serbia is looking at an outright invasion. Virtually all of their neighbors are negative.
Frankly, Russia should have funded an America-style color revolution in Greece. The Greeks are good people, anti-anal, and pro-Russia. If the Greeks were on Team Russia, the situation would be drastically different.
As it is right now, Serbia is the only Russian base in Europe proper (aside from Belarus), and it is not connected to any friends.
Maybe Hungary is getting friendlier, but that doesn’t really help anything.
There has to be some kind of plan for Serbia to not just get completely blown out.

Serbs were good soldiers and for much of their history fought for other empires: Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, Russian, only fighting for their own state before and after the long period of servitude to the Ottomans.
My own view is that Serbia is not in any position to start thinking about war which requires resources Serbia doesn’t have. It is completely surrounded by members of an enemy block, NATO and its exist to the seas is cut off by the fake Montenegrin state. So how would Serbia obtain supplies from any friendly state when even Lavrov cannot visit there? Now if Albanians start killing Serbs in Kosovo and KFOR doesn’t do much to protect them I suppose they will have to send their forces there regardless of consequences and could end up getting pounded yet again by NATO. Unless Russians can conquer Romania, or Bulgarians overthrow their regime and re-establish friendly relations with Russia, which seems unlikely, it looks very bleak for Serbs, including those in Bosnia. It really all depends on the West; if they want to start another war there they could do it anytime they feel like it by using their proxies in Bosnia and Kosovo. And then NATO would do to Serbia what Russia is doing to the Ukraine.

Well, with long range weapons, territorial connection is no longer required. Once both Serbia are Russia are free from their puppet governments, the end will come to Putin’s “partners”. I.e. once NATO snake is taken care of, local WW2 Nazi partners (Shqiptars aka Albanians, Catholic Croats, Bosnian Muslims, and Catholic Slovenians) will be defeated and disperse like the cowards they are.

Algeria, Iran, Syria, Azerbaidjan, Indonesia are also Muslim countries and none of them recognises Kosovo. Serbs don’t have a problem with Muslims, Serbs have a Jewish problem. Just like Russia, the enemies of Serbia are Jews.
True, but I believe Serbia had closer cooperation with Libya and Iraqi military. Certainly the countries you mention are not hostile to Serbia but I think the two I mentioned even gave moral support. Gaddafi definitely was a great friend of Serbs.
The best thing for Serbia is to wait it out but the question is will it be allowed to do so. That is why there are ever more provocations in Kosovo and Bosnia.

If Serbia is attacked, again, by NATO attack dogs, Russia is quite capable of helping Serbia remotely by precision-striking enemy targets inside Serbia, as Russia has clearly demonstrated in Ukraine.
However, Serb military will need massive amounts of small arms ammunition, artillery shells, all sorts of war matériel. Armored personnel carriers, tanks,….
Food, fuel,…..
Air cargo transport is very vulnerable to shootdowns.
Russia needs a land corridor to supply Serbia adequately in a real war.

Agree. Serbia has neither supply nor escape route. All they can do is hope NATO doesn’t attack until the global geopolitical picture changes, whenever that will be.

But NATO is just a front.
NATO is run by US+UK, i.e. Anglo-Americans.

For a couple of centuries England was the quintessential “Perfidious Albion”, sowing mischief and trouble all over the world, safe and secure in their island fortress. After WW2, US took the mantle: safe and secure behind vast oceans, while her military bases are sited in every corner of the world.

I am surprised France is so determined to support, arm, and train the Ukrainians considering they refused to get involved in the invasion of Iraq. As far as the war against Russia is concerned they are no less belligerent than USA and UK.
If NATO decides to attack Serbia I am afraid there is nothing much that can be done. If they give Serbia an impossible ultimatum, and Serbia accepts all its points, they’ll just lie that Serbia didn’t accept and keep on bombing. If Serbia capitulates they could just lie that it didn’t and keep on bombing. I wouldn’t put any perfidy beyond them. They have repeatedly shown that they are capable of inventing monstrous lies just to keep bombing, like the many lies about WMDs in Iraq, like who did 911 so as to invade Afghanistan, etc. If they attack Serbia again they won’t leave the job half finished like last time but go all the way.
I see the situation differently. The US will not have the consensus to attack Serbia again under another false pretext. First, they do not have infantry and would be afraid to attack even if they had. Second, aircrafts will also not be able to fly freely since Serbia now has a Russian anti-air defense system that did not have before and could not shoot upper to 5000 m freely. However, they managed to shoot down several planes, including the ‘invisible’ one.
Then, the US will not be able to fly from all sides as before, but only from Italy via Bosnia. So, all they can do is to fire tomahawks from the Adriatic. They can be stopped, but still, they can demolish civil infrastructure (e.g. the electricity industry). Serbia has a well-developed military industry and sizeable exports, so it does not need anything, even though the former puppet government vassals destroyed a large number of tanks.
In case of war, Serbia can conquer Kosovo in one day despite Bondsteel. Furthermore, when it conquers Odessa, Russia becomes a de facto neighboring country and can use the Danube as an international river to supply arms to Serbia. It is most likely that the US will bluff and create low-intensity local conflicts through the Albanians in Kosovo and less likely through the Muslims in Bosnia. Serbia is still the strongest in the Balkans, it can resist the entire NATO (basically US and Britain), but it cannot protect the civilians in Kosovo in the current situation. That’s why they have to hold out until the Russians enter Odessa.
The fact is that the US brought their vassals to power in Serbia with a color revolution after the 1999 war. But the Serbian conscripts on the Koshare did not die in vain.
First, Serbian weapons won, the occupation of the country was prevented, and that remains to be remembered forever.
Second, US was forced to sign a peace contract in which Kosovo remains part of Serbia (US don’t respect that, but that’s the legal situation).
Third, according to that contract, Serbia can have 1,000 soldiers in Kosovo to protect civilians, cultural heritage and borders (US again does not respect that, but it exists as a legal document of the United Nations).
Fourth, NATO is present in Kosovo only as a peacekeeping mission of the United Nations and not as a NATO occupier (although they behave like the occupier).
Fifth, the US failed to join Serbia to the NATO pact, they were not allowed to enter and be outside the Serbian law as they demanded and had immunity for rapes and all other wrongdoings as in other occupied areas and, in addition, to being exempt from all costs of its stay.
So, Serbian recruits, border guards, stopped the invasion of much more numerous NATO infantry on the border with Albania, in a battle at 2000 m above sea level, and thus entered history and legend like the Battle of Kosovo. Their surviving comrades from Koshare recently held a commemoration for their fallen comrades and marked the 20th anniversary of the famous battle:

My concern is that after their defeat in the Ukraine NATO will be looking to unleash their rage and frustration on some small country that they can bomb into oblivion. So if not Serbia where else?
I am familiar with Serbian and ex Yu military industry . They used to produce huge amount of ammo but there is one problem , when pro western government took power , first thing they did is to destroy army and industry . So now it is recovering under Vucic but still far from what used to be . Paradoxically, I cannot see even a tiny country. North Korea or Nicaragua would be desirable targets but too strong for the US. And then the Russians would immediately come to retaliate. After a couple of downed planes, it would be a completely different situation.
There is no consensus for Serbia since all other Nato countries (except Britain and Germany) would refuse to participate. There is also a lack of multi-year propaganda for preparation (ethnic cleansing, mass graves, wmd, etc.), so it could not be justified even to the own public. Thousands of fresh Russian volunteers would immediately come to Serbia, although they are not necessary since NATO has no infantry.
US wouldn’t be able to use the high altitude planes like last time as they would be shot down. And the bombing alone makes no sense since Serbia, like other countries, is deindustrialized, and energy transmission could only be interrupted. And that would also mean the arrival of Russia in the Balkans in a big way, pushing the US out of that area and moving the border of the NATO pact to Slovenia and Italy. The US could only fire tomahawks from ships in the Adriatic, but one Caliber from the Black Sea would stop that.
So, in the Balkans, they can only incite the terror of Albanian Scipetars against Serbian civilians. Maybe they could try their luck again with Grenada since they were successful last time.
