“Pagan” Monotheism?
The notion that the Greeks or Romans — or even the Barbarians — were incapable of rising above polytheism to the concept of a universal God, and that Europeans needed Jewish monotheism — in the form of Christianity — to “know” “God”, is the seminal Jewish lie that has alienated us from our Roman past, and ultimately enslaved us to Jewish Power. If the Jews gave us God, then we owe them the world, and they know it.
Before Constantine, Romans were not duped by this kind of chutzpah. Neither did the Jews’ claim that Homer, Pythagoras and Plato learned everything from Moses get much credit among them. And still at the very end of the 4th century, philosopher Maximus of Madaura tried to explain to his former pupil Augustine:
Who could ever be so frantic and infatuated as to deny that there is one supreme God, without beginning, without natural offspring, who is, as it were, the great and mighty Father of all? The powers of this Deity, diffused throughout the universe which He has made, we worship under many names, as we are all ignorant of His true name, the name God being common to all kinds of religious belief. Thus it comes, that while in diverse supplications we approach separately, as it were, certain parts of the Divine Being, we are seen in reality to be the worshippers of Him in whom all these parts are one.
Two centuries earlier, another Maximus, from Tyre, noted that, despite the variety of religious views, “you will see throughout the world one uniform rule and doctrine, that there is one God, king and father of all things, and many gods, sons of God and his coregents. The Greek says so, likewise the non-Greek.” I borrow this last quote from Ramsay MacMullen’s book Paganism in the Roman Empire, the most informative and insightful that I have ever read on the subject. According to the author, “It appears thus to be a part of the intellectual heritage of the times that god might be one; all ‘gods,’ simply his will at work in various spheres of action.”[1]Ramsay MacMullen, Paganism in the Roman Empire, Yale University Press, 1981, pp. 87-88.
The Roman Empire, being assembled out of many conquered peoples, each with their own system of faith, was notoriously liberal in its religious policy. They banned human sacrifice and mutilation, and they had laws against sorcery (magic with criminal intent), as well as against soothsayers, for fear of popular unrest. But temples, priesthoods and festivals of various gods were not only tolerated, but often supported with public funds.
Jupiter was the traditional name for the supreme god, but in the second century, a sort of monotheism was promoted by emperors through the cult of the Sun god , generally identified as Apollo. Sol Invictus appears on Roman coins from the reign of Antoninus Pius (138-161), Aurelian (270-275) established the festival of Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (“birthday of the Invincible Sun”) on 25 December, and Constantine decreed dies solis (“Sunday”), a day of rest, before switching his allegiance from Apollo to Christ — who, it was found out later, happened to have the same birthday. The cult of Sol Invictus was too political to be popular, but it shows that monotheism was never incompatible with polytheism.
Philosophers and their students had little interest in cults, and disapproved of the popular “superstition” that went with some. But they saw no incompatibility between the uniqueness of the divine and the plurality of its manifestations or representations. They used the words “God” (Zeus), “the god” (o theos) or “the gods” (oi theoi) interchangeably (for example Cicero in On the nature of the gods). In the understanding of the literati at least, polytheism was an inclusive monotheism.
Greek-speaking Romans could find in Plato’s works plenty of monotheistic statements. From the 3rd century, they could learn from Plotinus’s (through Porphyry’s Enneads) that the universe is the emanation of the One, who gave rise to Universal Intelligence, the Idea of Ideas, which in turn gave rise to the Soul of the World, the germinating force that animates all living beings. Emperor Julian (361-363), known to Christians as “the apostate”, was essentially a Neoplatonist monotheist.
Stoicism had the most lasting, albeit the most diffuse influence until the 3rd century, according to Anthony Long.[2]Anthony A. Long, Stoic Studies, Cambridge UP, 1996. The only serious competitor at the time—besides Platonism, which was a common legacy of every school—was Epicureanism. Epicurus’ system relied on the atomist materialism of Democritus, and taught that chance and necessity govern the world. Epicureanism lacked the Stoic sense of “Providence” (Greek pronoia, Latin providentia), as Marcus Aurelius emphasized in his Meditations by the repeated disjunction: “Either providence or atoms.” It could have become for Europeans what Confucianism is for the Chinese, for it shares a similar focus on the public good, combined with a sense of Providence and a soft, open concept of the divine (Cosmos, Heaven). It had the favor of emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180), whose reign was “possibly the only period in history in which the happiness of a great people was the sole object of government,” according to Edward Gibbon.[3]Gibbon includes Marcus Aurelius’ predecessor Antoninus Pius in that assessment. Meanwhile, if we were to believe Celsus, Christianity attracted only “the foolish, dishonorable and stupid … slaves, women and little children.”[4]Origen, Contra Celsum 3.44. “In the early second century AD, Christianity already numbered among its ranks some senators of Rome (admittedly only a few) and imperial functionaries” (Peter Heather, Christendom: The Triumph of a Religion, Penguin Books, 2023, p. 20).
From the premise that God is infinite by definition, the Stoics deduced that nothing can exist outside of God. Consequently, God and the Kosmos are one (kosmos translates as “order”, and refers to both the universe and its ordering principle). They were “immanent monotheists,” insisting on the presence of God in all things and beings, and in humans in particular. “Since our souls are so bound up and in contact with God as parts of Him and portions of Him, does not God perceive every motion of these parts as being his own motion connate with himself?” (Epictetus, Discourses I, 14).
This didn’t prevent the Stoics from addressing God in prayer. In his famous Hymn to Zeus, Cleanthes (3rd century BC) called God: “Nature’s great Sovereign, ruling all by law,” to whom men must turn their minds in order to live “the noble life, the only true wealth.” He prayed that people who do evil by ignorance can be enlightened: “Scatter, O Father, the darkness from their souls.” The Stoic Seneca wrote in the 1st century AD, in his Letter to Lucilius 41:
We do not need to uplift our hands towards heaven, or to beg the keeper of a temple to let us approach his idol’s ear, as if in this way our prayers were more likely to be heard. God is near you, he is with you, he is within you. This is what I mean, Lucilius: a holy spirit indwells within us, one who marks our good and bad deeds, and is our guardian. As we treat this spirit, so are we treated by it. Indeed, no man can be good without the help of God. Can one rise superior to fortune unless God helps him to rise? He it is that gives noble and upright counsel.
Is God Jealous?
In contrast to philosophical cosmotheism, Jewish monotheism is exclusive and theophobic — even theoclastic, according to Jan Assmann.[5]From the Greek klao, “break into pieces”. Yahweh is “the jealous god”, whose first commandment to his people is: “You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3, Deuteronomy 5:7). It was because of their contempt for the gods that the Jews were called “atheists” and reputed as a “race hated by the gods” in return (Tacitus, Histories V, 3). Yahweh’s jealousy is contagious and murderous. Phinehas “was possessed of the same jealousy as [Yahweh],” when he murdered an Israelite and his Midianite wife with a single strike of spear, because foreign wives contaminate the tribe with their foreign gods.[6]Exodus 34:14, Numbers 25:1-2, Deuteronomy 7:3-4, Nehemiah 13:27. Phinehas was rewarded for his heroic zeal with “the priesthood forever” for his descendants (Numbers 25).
In the Books of Kings, the kings of Judah and Israel are sorted in two categories: those who “did what is pleasing to Yahweh” by destroying all sanctuaries, altars and statues of other gods, like Hezekiah or Josiah (2Kings 18, 23) and those who “did what displeases Yahweh” by tolerating them, like Manasseh (2Kings 21). Prophets and kings who slaughter the Canaanite priests of Baal by the hundreds are heroes (Elijah in 1Kings 18, Jehu in 2Kings 10).
Yahweh’s jealousy is a justification for genocide: Moses orders the extermination of all living beings in some conquered cities, “lest they teach you to do all these abominations which they do to their gods” (Deuteronomy 20:18). Deuteronomy 13 orders the stoning to death of any Israelite who promotes the worship of any of “the gods of the peoples near or far who surround you.” And if some Israelites participate in the worship of other gods “in one of the cities that Yahweh your god has given you to live in,” the whole city must be exterminated and reduced to ashes. “The belief in a cruel god makes a cruel man,” wrote Thomas Paine (The Age of Reason, 1794); more to the point, the belief in a genocidal god makes a genocidal people.
The Jewish God was not made less jealous when he fathered a Son and became the Christian God. For peoples throughout the Roman Empire, the Christian religion was unique, not for its claim that one man was conceived by a divine father with a mortal woman and overcame death, but for its fanatic intolerance of any other cults.
Christianity accepts the two premises that the god of the Jews is God, and the gods of all other peoples are demons, a Greek word that Christians redefined as Satan’s agents. “What the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God” (1Corinthians 10:20). And since the gods were everywhere in pre-Christian times — in every social activity —, now the whole world became infested by demons.
From the time of Constantine’s sons, when God’s jealousy became imperial law, Christianization has meant the destruction of temples and altars, first in the cities, then in the countryside, and finally in every home. In 346, Firmicus Maternus, invoking Deuteronomy 13:6-9, informs Constantius and Constans that Christ expects from them “the extermination of idolatry and the overthrow of the pagan temples,” so that “the devil should be utterly overthrown and laid low by your laws.” Besides, there is gold to be plundered:
Take away, yes, calmly take away, Most Holy Emperors, the adornments of the temples. Let the fire of the mint or the blaze of the smelters melt them down, and confiscate all the votive offerings to your own use and ownership.[7]Firmicus Maternus, The Error of the Pagan Religions, x.7 and xxviii.6 (trans. With impunity, the saints and their monks vandalized pagan shrines throughout the Roman world in the late 4th and 5th century, exactly like the sectarians of Yahweh who go about destroying Canaanite sanctuaries in the Books of Kings. In the words of the non-Christian scholar Libanius (c. 314-392), pleading without success to emperor Theodosius to prevent the destruction of a temple in Edesssa:
[Christian monks] hasten to attack the temples with sticks and stones and bars of iron … Then utter desolation follows, with the stripping of roofs, demolition of walls, the tearing down of statues and the overthrow of altars, and priests must either keep quiet or die. After demolishing one, they scurry to another and to a third, and trophy is piled on trophy, in contravention of the law.[8]Peter Heather, Christendom: The Triumph of a Religion, Penguin Books, 2023, p. 115.
According to Ramsay MacMullen, such Christian zealots destroyed “no doubt more of the architectural and artistic treasure of their world than any passing barbarians thereafter.” Thus ends his book Christianizing the Roman Empire (A.D. 100-400), another masterpiece:
Silencing, burning, and destruction were all forms of theological demonstration; and when the lesson was over, monks and bishops, generals and emperors, had driven the enemy from our field of vision. In his follow-up volume, Christianity and Paganism in the Fourth to Eighth Centuries, MacMullen illustrates the bloody persecutions of the recalcitrant non-Christians under emperors Justinian (527-565) and Tiberius (578-582). Quoting from John of Ephesus (Ecclesiatical History III, 27-32), he tells how the army commander Theophilus was sent by Tiberius, first to Baalbek-Heliopolis in Phoenicia, to teach the unbaptized a lesson:
“[He] seized many of them and punished them as their impudence merited, humbling their pride and crucifying and killing them.” When their like were denounced “in every region and city of the east, especially Antioch,” he proceeded against these populations, too, summoning the high priest of Antioch to him at Edessa. The old man killed himself, but his elderly associates were terrified into denouncing as his fellow-worshiper no less than Anatolius, the vice-prefect, provincial governor, and apparently a senator as well. Anatolius was therefore remanded to a Constantinopolitan court (ca. 579), tried and found guilty, tortured, torn up by wild beasts, and then crucified, while his aide died of his tortures.[10]Ramsay MacMullen, Christianity and Paganism in the Fourth to Eighth Centuries, Yale UP, 1997, p.
Christian emperors and their armed bishops did to their Gentile subjects exactly what Jews would have done had they been in the same position of power. It is by Bolshevik-style systematic persecution and terror, and not by any other means, that the inhabitants of the Roman empire were converted over the course of one century.[11]Read also Peter Heather, Christendom: The Triumph of a Religion, Penguin Books, 2023. The Jewish God’s jealousy was even aggravated in Christianity by his new trinitarian susceptibility. You don’t worship him properly if you don’t confess that he is homoiousianly three persons in one. Even before Christians were able to persecute non-Christians with imperial backing, they persecuted each other on such dogmatic matters. And when it had no more “pagans” to “convert”, the Papal church turned back against heretics with renewed vigor, transforming Christendom into what Robert I. Moore has described as a “persecuting society.”[12]Robert I. Knowledge of Good and Evil
God’s exclusivism is only one aspect of Judeo-Christian monotheism. Let’s turn to other aspects that are also best apprehended in context and in contrast with the religious and philosophical culture of the Gentiles, influenced by Stoicism in particular.
Philosophers traditionally distinguished between three branches of teaching: logics, physics, and ethics. According to a metaphor attributed to the Stoic Chrysippus of Soli (3rd century BC), philosophy is like a fertile orchard whose fence is logic, whose trees are physics, and whose fruit is ethics. There are variations on this agricultural metaphor: for Seneca, philosophy is like a tree whose roots are logic, whose trunk is physics and whose branches are ethics (the fruit, then, could be the joy produced by the ethical life).[13]Juliette Dross, « Les métamorphoses de l’arbre de la philosophie, de l’ancien stoïcisme à Descartes », Revue de philosophie ancienne, 2011, 29 (2), pp. 75-96, hal.science/hal-03146966/
Logic is the beginning. It is the only human faculty that can contemplate itself, noted Epictetus (Discourses I, 1). According to the Stoics, the Cosmos is rational, and human reason (logos) is man’s participation in the divine Reason (Logos).
Physics, the study of Nature (Phusis), encompasses both what we now call science and metaphysics. The cosmotheistic considerations presented above belong there.
Ethics is the knowledge of good and evil. Stoic ethics is based on logic, through a discipline of “inner discourse” aimed at distinguishing what is under our control from what is not: “We must make the best use that we can of the things which are in our power, and use the rest according to their nature” (Epictetus, Discourses I, 1). But ethics is also based on physics, because virtue requires a metaphysical understanding of the holistic interconnectedness of all beings. The virtuous man tries to live in harmony with Nature and with his own nature, and to be a factor of social harmony in every situation.
At least since Socrates, philosophers taught the equation of wisdom, virtue and happiness: it is by knowing and then doing what is right that one takes care of one’s soul and finds true joy and peace of mind. The Stoics did not base the encouragement to virtue on the belief in some post-mortem retribution, and rarely speculated about the afterlife.
Nevertheless, they took for granted that there was an immortal divine principle in man. The philosophers’ view on the immortality of the soul, however, was not necessarily egalitarian. According to Plato, man “partakes of immortality” only to the extent that he “thinks thoughts that are immortal and divine” (Timæus, 90b-c). Therefore, to philosophize is to learn to die (Phaedo). In practice, this meant, to Marcus Aurelius: “The perfection of conduct consists in using each day we live as if it were our last” (Meditations VII,69).
To summarize the main principles of Greco-Roman Stoicism:
1. Knowledge through logic: Reason is the gift of the gods to man. It is the highest faculty of the soul, through which man can understand the world, himself and the divine Logos.
2. Rational ethics: By reason alone man can know good from evil, which will make him want to be virtuous. Virtue is fulfilling one’s purpose in the Cosmos. Do not seek happiness, but seek virtue and you will find happiness. Since reason is universal, there exist universally valid moral principles.
3. Immanent monotheism, or Cosmotheism: Through Logos and Providence (Stoic concepts later appropriated by Christianity), God is immanent in the world. God is the soul of the universe, manifesting itself in a multiplicity of ways (“the gods”).
Additional point: The Greeks invented political philosophy, as opposed to political theology. Philosophers naturally thought that philosophy was necessary for good government, but few — not even Plato — believed in Plato’s utopia of the philosopher-kings: “Do not expect Plato’s Republic,” Marcus Aurelius advised himself (Meditations IX, 29). The Stoics generally favored a constitution based on “a mixture of democracy, kingship and aristocracy” (Diogenes Laertius, Lives VII, 131).[14]Lisa Hill and Eden Blazejak, Stoicism and the Western Political Tradition, Palgrave/Macmillan, 2021.
The Jewish Paradigm
The Judaic religious paradigm, expressed in the Hebrew Bible, differs from the Stoic paradigm in three essential respects:
1. The Bible emphasizes revelation, not reason. Whereas the Stoic God is accessible through human reason, which is an extension of the divine Logos, the Jewish God has to “reveal” himself miraculously to make Himself known to His chosen. He requires not reason, but belief and obedience. It is necessary to believe that it is indeed God the Creator who speaks in the Book, and it is necessary to obey his commandments. The God of the Jews imposes his Law (Torah), which needs no rational justification.
2. The God-given Law, not human reason or wisdom, determines right and wrong. Whereas the Stoic affirms man’s capacity to know good from evil through reason, there is no other moral code for the Jew than obedience to God’s commandments, however absurd or scandalously immoral they may seem to natural morality. The Bible’s moral codes are only valid for the Chosen people, and have no universal value. Contrary to what is suggested by rigged translations, the Decalogue (Deuteronomy 5:17-20) has no universal scope (as best explained by John Hartung).
3. God is transcendent, not immanent. Whereas the Stoic God is the immanent soul of the Cosmos, the Jewish God is external to His creation. He is a person, with a peculiar character, tastes and opinions. He pre-exists to his creation, and remains external to it. He is the maker and the owner of the world (Leviticus 25:23), retaining the right to intervene on it according to his whims. The biblical God does not manifest himself in immutable natural laws — a notion foreign to the Torah — but rather in miracles and cataclysms.
Whereas cosmotheism fosters trust in the universe, Jewish monotheism impresses fear and terror, not just on the Goyim, but on the Jews themselves: “And if, in spite of this, you will not listen to me but go against me, I shall go against you in fury and punish you seven times over for your sins” (Leviticus 26:27). A good Jew is a God-fearing Jew, and I would argue that the fear of God is the backbone of Jewishness (read my two related articles, “Fear and Terror” and “The Cursed People”).
Whereas the Greeks and Romans assumed that rulers are best advised by philosophers, who try to think logically, the Bible emphasizes that kings must obey the priests, and especially the prophets, who get their orders directly from God — which meant destroying all sanctuaries other than the temple of Jerusalem.
The antinomy between Hebraism and Hellenism is remarkably metaphorized in the third chapter of the Book of Genesis, probably written during the early Hellenistic period (like the story of Joseph in Genesis 37-50, and the books of Daniel, of Esther, of Job, of Ezra and Nehemiah, and a few more).[15]According to biblical scholars of the “minimalist” school, the Tanakh betrays an ideology elaborated during the Persian era, but its final edition dates from the Hasmoneans. Read for example Philip Davies, In Search of “Ancient Israel”: A Study in Biblical Origins, Journal of the Study of the Old Testament, 1992. In this myth of the Garden of Eden, “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” is an almost transparent designation of philosophy. The Serpent speaks like Socrates or Plato when he says that, by the fruit of that tree, “your eyes will open and you will be like gods [elohim], who know good and evil” (Genesis 3:5). The message of Greek wisdom is demonized, for contradicting Yahweh’s demand of unconditional obedience to the most absurd commandment. Greek philosopher Celsus saw the trick, and declared that the god of the Jews must be the enemy of mankind, “since he cursed the serpent, from whom the first men received the knowledge of good and evil” (Origen, Against Celsus VI, 28). Some early Gnostics thought the same, considering Yahweh as an evil archon and the Serpent as an avatar of Christ. I’ll write more on that some other time.
The Christian Lord God
Christianity is a syncretic combination of Hebraism and Hellenism. Its theology was crafted with the Greeks’ philosophical toolbox, but the raw material is mostly Jewish. It includes the Jewish premise that “Yahweh, the god of Israel” is God. And so, although the Christian God has been somewhat softened by fatherhood, He is still the Jewish God.
1. Just like the Jewish God, the Christian God cannot be understood by reason alone: Revelation is the prerequisite. The Law is now replaced by dogmas, which is a more alienating form of legalism: the Jew has the obligation to do, but the Christian has the obligation to believe. This goes with an even greater contempt for human reason: “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the sight of God” (1Corinthians 3:19). In the words of Tertullian of Carthage: “What indeed has Athens to do with Jerusalem? What has the Academy to do with the Church? … We want no curious disputation after possessing Christ Jesus, no inquisition after receiving the gospel!” (Prescription Against Heretics, 7). The Church Fathers condemn the philosophers’ libido sciendi as a mortal vanity, a concupiscence born of our corruption or of the Devil.
2. Christianity affirms the necessity of God’s revelation and of the Church’s sacraments for man’s salvation, and the incapacity of human reason alone to determine morality. It was on this issue that saint Augustine came into violent conflict with the British monk Pelagius. Without denying the necessity of grace, Pelagius asserted that moral perfection was attainable through the practice of virtue, because man’s freedom resides in his reason, which “is not vitiated by original sin.” This was a dangerous doctrine for the Church, since it nullified the necessity of the sacraments, and therefore the power of priests.
3. The Christian God is still the anthropomorphic Jewish God who created and owns the world — and plans on destroying it at some point. He chooses, orders, complains, curses, and demands obedience. He is a transcendent person (three persons, if you insist), accessible only in a person-to-person relationship. The medieval Church conceived that relationship on the model of the feudal bond between vassal and suzerain. This led to the customary Catholic gesture of prayer being borrowed from the rite of homage, which required the vassal to join his hands and the suzerain to take them in his own (immixtio manuum). This gesture also appears in clerical iconography, as a symbol of the submission of kings to the suzerainty of the popes (head picture: Charlemagne before Leo III).
By promoting this feudal concept of a hierarchical relationship between man and his God, the Church could insert itself into that relationship as exclusive mediator, through sacraments and “indulgences”, just like the Levites had done in Biblical times. The cosmic, immanent vision of God, on the other hand, abolishes the distance between man and God, and consequently the distinction between clergy and laity. That is why mystical experiences of the cosmic God were always viewed with suspicion.
Besides producing a closing of the philosophical mind, the concept of God as Lord contained the seeds of its own destruction: man’s revolt against God, properly unthinkable in the paradigm of cosmotheism. In the final analysis, it was Yahweh who killed God in the West.
The Cosmotheist Resistance and the German revival
Until the Gregorian Reformation of the 11th century, the cosmic God could still find some limited freedom of expression. John Scotus (Erigena) sounded like a Stoic philosopher when he explained in the Division of Nature, written about 867, that “God is all in all. … We should not understand God and the creatures as two things removed from one another, but as one and the same thing.”[16]John J. God manifests Himself in the union of all opposites, Scotus added, which led him to deny the devil’s real power: evil is merely a “misdirection of the will.” Scotus proclaimed the sovereignty of reason in man, superior even to the authority of Scripture, which is provisional. He was twice condemned by the archbishop of Lyon, but found protection at the court of Charles the Bald. He was a lay scholar, something that soon became inconceivable.
Despite Church censorship, Scotus’ work was rediscovered in the 12th century by Amaury of Chartres, master of logic at the University of Paris. After Amaury’s death in 1206, his followers were hunted down for teaching “that God was the formal principle of all things” (as reported by Thomas Aquinas). The Amauricians, write a recent scholar, believed in “the immanent presence of the Divinity in the whole of Creation, which renders useless the grace conferred by the sacraments.”[17]Marie-Thérèse D’Alverny, « un fragment du procès des Aumauriciens », Archives d’histoire Doctrinale et Littéraire Du Moyen Age, vol. 18, 1950, pp. 325-336, www.jstor.org/stable/44403647 In 1210, fourteen of them, including some priests and deacons, were sentenced to the stake, and ten others to life imprisonment.
But the “heresy”, which is today labelled “pantheism” (a word coined in 1705) but was then denounced as “atheism”, survived, as witness the interrogations of around a hundred “heretics” in southern Germany in 1270 (never forget the quotation marks in “heresy” and “heretics”, for those accused never claimed to be anything but good Christians).
We don’t know whether Master Eckhart (1260-1328) had ever heard of Scotus or Amaury, but he expressed his mystical insights in powerful cosmotheistic formulas: “The eye with which God looks at me is the eye with which I look at Him; my eye and His eye are identical.” His proposition that the human soul is uncreated because it is a particle of God, was condemned by Pope John XXII’s bull In agro dominico in 1329.
Eckhart was a Dominican monk who taught in Latin at the Sorbonne, but preached in German to nuns, who preserved notes of his sermons. As Ernst Benz explains in The Mystical Sources of German Romantic Philosophy, the German language had so far had no share in philosophical and theological discourse, and Eckhart’s novel use of it to convey his mystical experiences had a considerable influence on later German thought: thanks to Eckhart, German philosophy started on a mystical and cosmotheist basis.[18]Ernst Benz , The Mystical Sources of German Romantic Philosophy, Pickwick Publications, 1983, p. 8-10.
Eckhart was condemned, but his German sermons survived, to be rediscovered by Franz von Baader, a friend of Hegel (1770-1831), and they influenced German idealist and romantic thinkers of that period.
Another later German mystic, Jakob Boehme (1575-1624), equally impressed Fichte, Schelling and Hegel. “The whole of nature”, Boehme wrote in Aurora, “is the body or corporeality of God.” Like Scotus, Boehme saw creation as a universal and eternal dialectical process: each thing can only be revealed by another that resists it. Light cannot be revealed without darkness, good cannot be revealed without evil, spirit without the resistance of matter.[19]Nicolas Berdiaev , Études sur Jacob Boehme (1945), 2020, p. 6. Boehme was lucky enough to live in Saxony, then one of the most tolerant Protestant states.
His Italian contemporary Giordano Bruno was condemned to the stake in 1600, after seven years of imprisonment with repeated torture. A Dominican monk and a teacher at the Sorbonne, Bruno went further than Copernicus’ heliocentrism by teaching that the universe had neither center nor circumference. Refusing to recant, he began his defense before the Congregation of the Holy Office, otherwise known as the Inquisition, by stating: “I teach the infinity of the universe and the action of divine power in its infinity.”[20]Sigrid Hunke, La Vraie religion de l’Europe. Scotus, Amaury, Eckhart, Boehme and Bruno are some of the mystics and intellectuals that Sigrid Hunke (1913-1999) discusses in her book Europas Einege religion (not translated in English), an uplifting apology of the “heretical” cosmotheistic tradition revived by post-Kantian German philosophy.
Hunke includes in that tradition Spinoza (1632-1677), to whom the term “pantheist” was first applied. German philosophical circles were shaken in 1785, when Jacobi revealed that his friend Lessing (1729-1781), an immensely popular thinker, had told him: “Hen Kai Pân. One and All. I know nothing else. … There is no other philosophy than Spinoza’s.” The ensuing “pantheism controversy” is the backdrop to Immanuel Kant’s Critique of the Faculty of Judgment, published in 1790, and contributed in no small way to post-Kantian idealism.
Like Lessing, Hegel (1770-1831) was much impressed by Spinoza. He wrote in one of his early works, Faith and Knowledge (1802): “Spinoza constitutes such a crucial point for modern philosophy that we might say in effect that there is a choice between Spinozism and no philosophy at all.”[21]Pierre Macherey, Hegel or Spinoza, University of Minnesota Press, 1979, p. 13. Twenty-five years later, Hegel wrote: “Philosophy properly speaking begin in the ninth century with John Scottus Erigena.”[22]G. W. F. Hegel, Lectures on the History of Philosophy 1825-6. For Hegel, everything that is real is rational, and the purpose of philosophy is to “bring this rationality to consciousness.” Here are more quotes from his Lectures on the Philosophy of World History:

Following in the footsteps of Goethe, Hegel made a heroic effort to free Western thinking from the chains of Jewish monotheism. Although he seemed reluctant to recognize it, his work was the revenge of Stoicism.[24]Hegel was not the last word: Schopenhauer vehemently opposed him (in a typical Hegelian dialectical way, actually), proclaiming that in the beginning is not Reason, but Will. This was still, somehow, cosmotheism. It is an irony of History — the “World Spirit” works in mysterious ways — that this had to come from the former Barbarians.

Nearly sixty years ago I attended a lecture at a prestigious Catholic university at which the speaker, a Jesuit theologian, proposed that Christianity was facing two existential crises in the late 20th century: that it had become clear that this “Jesus” individual did not see himself as a god, nor did he ever intend to create a new religion.
I have been following the story ever since, and see nothing but confirmations of this analysis, as new archaeological discoveries come to light and so much more is now understood about the history of his time, psychology, the transmission of oral tradition, and cultural synthesis and development. How this charismatic Jewish fundamentalist nationalist became the universal god of mankind is perhaps the most remarkable tale in history – not because it is true, but because the story has had such a profound effect on human development when people believed it was true. But now that time has passed. Jesus has failed, just as all the gods before him no longer beguile us as they once did. Back in the Bronze Age no one understood thunderstorms, so lightning and thunder were attributed to a deity – an angry deity. The early priest named the deity Yahweh, then constructed an entire religion around a incorrect observation of a natural phenomenon. No one now believes that thunder and lightning are actions by an angry god, but the religion based on those false assumptions still exist, Judaism is still a primitive superstitious (meaning insane) construct – and the barbaric practices are still acted out, like circumcision, revenge, animal sacrifice, etc.

The idea of surviving death was big business and eventually the idea of humans going into another life became universally accepted – since everyone wants that. When Egypt finally fell into Roman dominance those ideas of afterlife were rampant and became part of the Judeo based Christian religion, now afterlife was achievable for anyone who believed Jesus and his miracle of resurrection. None of this afterlife stuff was proven, just believed because humans want to believe it. The entire world fell under this spell and it persists to this day.
The really big joke is the fervent beliefs mean nothing in reality. Nature does not care what you believe. You can believe anything you want, and if you believe or think wrong, it could cause injury or death. In the case of Christ insanity, believing in the next life is not fatal, and when you die and dead, your beliefs of going somewhere mattered not in real terms, and for you, you are dead, lose consciousness, so they don’t matter either. Most humans are living their entire lives inside religious delusions without a clue – all caused by this lack of understanding of origin.
People really need to supersede the Bible spell, until we get proof, no one should believe they can survive death. If you go hunting and kill a deer, do you think the deer went somewhere? No, the deer is dead and you can see that. We do not believe any animal survives death except ourselves – this is one of our great delusions – and it is only wishful thinking that sustains it. What Christ insanity is selling is the denial of reality, the denial of death. Billions are made selling this hope of eternal life, people want it and are not only willing to pay for it (like mummification), they are willing to suspend normal discernment to keep the idea alive in their consciousness because it gives them comfort in this life. Hope is the cope dope you use to tread the awful existence of life on earth.
This yearning to transcend suffering is caused because humans do not like life on earth – life is hard, tedious, full of suffering, and horrible death and other tragedies – and humans want is a life of no suffering – so they invented heaven – a place of eternal bliss with no suffering at all. Such a place does not exist, except in our imaginations. The reason we want heaven and invented heaven is because of our ET genetic engineered origin – humans were created by cross breeding local hominens with the gods – this resulted in an unnatural big brained hominid completely out of whack with the natural order. Good stuff here, as usual with this author. However, there are a couple of structural issues I’d like to address, since structure is often where error and mischief creep in.
1. You keep using this word, “Stoicism,” as if it were synonymous with the Greco-Roman mentality, and thus, alien to Semitism.

2. A second point, if I may; I was impatiently waiting to see how Schopenhauer would fit in, and I find him there at the very end, the end of the last footnote. I’m enough of an amateur Straussian to find that significant, as if that were the secret message all along.
However, there’s no need to squeeze him in, by making the Will a “dialectical” mate to Hegel’s Reason, and I’m not sure what you mean by “still somehow Cosmotheism.” Hegel’s Stoic/Judaic/Globalist fantasy of Reason and the world as Rational is pure bunkum, even if it wasn’t pure Tikkun Olam (which is why it easily became Communism). Interesting and informative. However, the writer’s view represents very much an over-simplification, one that has been doing the rounds since at least the time of Gibbon. Whilst the views of the Greek and Roman philosophers were humane, they had little impact upon the lives of the population as a whole. Life, for the great majority of people was nasty, brutal and short. Rome was an empire built upon slavery, and the living conditions of this huge segment of the population were generally speaking horrific. As well as the horrors of the galleys and the mines, a huge part of the slave population were essentially sex slaves. And the Romans may have outlawed formal human sacrifice, but they could not, or would not, outlaw the mass murder of children through infanticide. This practice was so common that it may have been the factor most responsible for the collapse of the Western Empire.
Whilst it is a tragedy that Christianity was unable to completely sever its historical links to Judaism and Yahweh worship, there is no question that even this tainted version of Christianity presented the opportunity for a more humane society than any of the other competing systems. Christianity did not win because it was forced on people, it won because it did not murder babies, disapproved of sex slavery, and extended the hand of charity to the suffering, as for example during the appalling Plague of Cyprian in the mid-third century.
Having said all that, I think we can agree that the Christian faith must eventually, if it is to really implement the intentions of its founder, cut all ideological and philosophical links with the poison of Yahweh worship.
Judaism and Christianity do have common beliefs, if by Judaism you mean the teachings of the Old Testament, and not the Talmud, and that Christianity is the New Testament teachings, and not the numerous pagan beliefs that have been erroneously piled upon it.
They both believe that there is a messiah yet to come to earth, and that he will rule the world righteously and in peace. The Judaists do not believe that this Messiah will be Jesus Christ.
Both beliefs accept that the Abrahamic covenant teaches that a singular “seed” or descendant of Abraham will rule from the Nile to the Euphrates Genesis 12 and 15.
Both beliefs accept that a greater son of David will sit on the throne of David to rule that kingdom. As most scholars will tell you, Christianity isn’t the religion of Jesus, it’s the religion about Jesus. It begins not with the birth and teachings of Christ, but with his death. The religion primarily revolves around the personhood of Jesus, and not his actual message (which was apocalyptic and thus irrelevant to us today). Michael Jones that Christianity with its doctrines of love and sublimation has contributed to civilizing people and producing great works of art, music, and mysticism. Also, I grew up in a white post-Protestant Midwestern American culture whose ethics in general, and work ethic in particular, derived from Christianity and were actually pretty impressive. You might say “well, all of this would be even better if Europeans had been pagan philosophers” but I disagree. Philosophy is an elitist pursuit, and non-philosophical popular paganism devolves into base worldliness and human sacrifice.
By the way, Islam corrects the Yahwist defects of its predecessors by viewing God as fully universal (non-tribal) and non-anthropomorphic. It strikes perfect balances between reason-revelation and immanence-transcendence, and eschews mystifications like the Trinity and the bureaucratic priesthoods that maintain them. In short, Monotheism 1.3 is the version most compatible with the views of philosophers and mystics from all traditions.

There are many ways to parse Christianity. I don’t care what churches say about it. I take what I like and leave the rest.

ALL religions are ethno-religions. Pagans worship themselves, their tribe or blood. Ancestor worship. We can translate this into modern terms: the object of worship is the ethno-soul, a kind of cloud storage device of ethnic characteristics (h/t Rurik Skywalker) or a morphic field (R. Sheldrake).
Credo religions (are they any other than Christianity?) are what we would call an ideology (all ideologies are scams created by verbal Jews), a system of ideas no one would have thought of unless “revealed” to the “priests and prophets.” Being unnatural, they require verbal assent, over and over, and constant supervision lest the people “backslide” or revert to their pagan — i.e. natural — ways.
The Jewish trick — as LG explains elsewhere — is to exploit an ambiguity, an equivocation, and under the pretense of offering the One God slip in “the only god, our god” i.e. the Jewish people themselves (or Jewish blood, as you say). The pagans intellectually derived the idea of One God over all, but the Jews fooled them by offering, for worship, not the true One but their jealous god among no other; the others being retconned as “demons”.
Thus did the goyim stop worshipping themselves, and began to worship … the Jews.

But he falls short because he’s missing the deeper metaphysical layer — the one a modern Gnostic view would reveal:
• That the problem isn’t just that Christianity inherited “Jewish ideas” about God — it’s that both Judaism and mainstream Christianity worship the Demiurge, a false god (the Architect of the simulation), not the true Source.
• From a Gnostic perspective, Yahweh is not merely “a tribal god that got universalized” (as a Stoic-influenced thinker might say) — he is an Archontic impostor, a corrupt being who claims to be the ultimate God but is not.
• The real error isn’t historical or sociological — it’s metaphysical. Humanity was deceived at the spiritual level to serve an enslaving entity.
In other words, the article is still trapped inside the simulation when it critiques the “Jewishness” of the Christian God. It recognizes the symptoms (cultural favoritism, authoritarianism, psychological manipulation) but not the cause (the demiurgic trap).

However, first let’s dispense with monotheistic claims of Judaism and Christianity, they are both rife with supernatural beings ‘gods’, like angels and demons, etc.

Both religions do share parts of the same scriptures however they pour completely different meanings into them. I did ‘t read the article, but I thought the whole point of Christianity from the beginning was to break away from Judaism and form a new covenant with God. The rich theology of Christianity is found in large part in the New Testament letters by Saint Paul and others. The “Christian God”, which is to say, God, is, as a matter of objective fact, not at all “Jewish” if by “Jewish” one understands the Ashkenazi ethno-religious group. The Ashkenazi have no connection whatsoever to Jesus of Nazareth or the Hebrews of the Old Testament. Numerous DNA studies have proven they are not of Middle Eastern origin, meaning there is no ethnic or racial connection. As mentioned, the Ashkenazi traditionally spoke Yiddish, a Germanic dialect, so there is no linguistic connection. Their dress, customs, cuisine, etc. have no resemblance to to those of the Middle East, so there is no cultural connection. Finally, their religion, rabbinical Judaism, is based on the Talmud, not the Old Testament, and is fundamentally different from the religion of the Old Testament. The Ashkenazi have simply lied over the centuries about being descended from the Old Hebrews, and those with little discernment still believe them.

There’s a difference between ancestor reverence and ancestor worship. Confucian Chinese venerated their ancestors but didn’t worship them. Revelation 2:11-15 in the Christian New testament refers to Jesus as king after his return to earth in future, as prophesied in so many Old and New testament prophecies :

I was not claiming that monotheism is a White European invention.
Monotheism, in the sense that the Cosmos is One and therefore the Divine is One too, is a thought that all civilizations, indeed all peoples, rose up to–even the savages Sioux believed in the Great Manitu–. And the notion that the best representation of the supreme God is the Sun is also quite natural. Zoroastrianism had it too, as epeeple points out.
However, Freud’s thesis that the Hebrew got their monotheism from Akhenaton has been rejected by all scholarship, for good reasons. Yahweh is not a Sun god at all (funny, actually, how he hooked up the sun in the heavens three days and three nights after saying “let there be light”). Jewish monotheism is a mono-polytheism: it did not arise from the thought of the unity of all gods, but from the claim that only the ethnic, petty god of the Hebrews is a real god, all other gods being either evil demons or non-existent. Before answering that question, I have to clarify, again, that Abrahamic monotheism is not genuine monotheism. It is a mono-polytheism (see my previous comment): it is based on the idea that one particular, ethnic god is the only real god. It proceeds by deicide of all other gods, not by unifying the divine.
Apart from that particular sick case, monotheism is superior to polytheism in the sense that it is the expression of the realization of the unity of the Cosmos: the Cosmos is one, therefore the divine is One. The human mind does “rise up” to the thought of the unity of things; this is what human reason can achieve.
That said, what I like in Cosmotheism is that it is a soft, open, inclusive monotheism compatible with polytheism. Why would God be masculine rather than feminine? By the same token: Why would God be singular rather than plural? He/she/they (what are God’s pronouns?) is all that.

Though I enjoyed reading the text which refreshed some of my studies, I must say that as a policial proposal I found it very lacking.

One topic that sets the Christianity of today apart from others (in my mind, at least) is its concepts of forgiveness and reconciliation with God (the moral father).
It seems to be assumed that the pagan world was utterly immoral with only a vague notion of guilt or wrongdoing. At least that is how Paul describes it.

Polytheism seems tolerant by nature – “There are many gods. You worship one. I worship another. We are both right.” Monotheism seems intolerant by nature – “There is only one God. I first encountered Guyenot quite a while ago in an article in which he was pushing intelligent design. In my experience, that’s usually a Christian position, so I assumed he was some species of Christian. I was surprised to find out in this article that he’s not.
Evidently he’s got Stoic sympathies, although it’s a modified form of Stoicism that seems to be dualistic, unlike the original, which held that the soul was a material substance, thus neatly avoiding the “ghost in the machine” problem of how something insubstantial could act upon the body, or be affected by it. But, above, he also says that Stoics “rarely speculated about the afterlife”, as though they believed in one, which they didn’t. Or does Guyenot believe in one? He doesn’t say so here, but overall in this article I get the sense that he seems to believe in the existence not only of an immaterial “soul”, possibly one for the entire universe, but also for each individual, something that might survive for an “afterlife”. That would make him a kind of Christianoid Stoic, if he’s a Stoic at all.
What does he mean by cosmotheism anyway? Is he a devotee of William Pierce’s religion? If so, it would be nice if he were more straightforward about it and just said so.

If Jesus was an Aryan forced migration by Semites into Galilee, he still would be a Son of the God’s, not a God the Son, so when he died, the God’s were not killed, which is impossible. The Bible does not describe Jesus as God the Son.

However, in reviewing this genetic evidence I saw an obvious puzzle that seemed to have passed unnoticed in all of the discussions I’d read.
Most mainstream experts seemed to quietly concede that Sand was correct in arguing that by the time of the Roman Empire the overwhelming majority of the Jews living along the shores of the Mediterranean were probably of convert stock, having little ancestry from the Israelites of Palestine. Yet the genetic evidence painted a very different picture for the major subsequent Jewish populations.
As mentioned, the Ashkenazi Jews seem to derive from Middle Eastern males who took European wives in the centuries after the Fall of Rome. Meanwhile, the Sephardic Jews of Muslim Spain are also of Middle Eastern ancestry, and they were the wealthiest and most numerous component of Jewry throughout much of the Middle Ages prior to their 1492 expulsion by Ferdinand and Isabella. So if only a small fraction of Jews had roots in Palestine, it appears quite odd that these would have become the progenitors of both the Sephardic and male Ashkenazi lines. Genetic evidence seems to conflict with strong literary and historical evidence.
I think the solution to this apparent mystery comes from considering a very simple question. If millions of pagans across the Mediterranean world probably converted to Judaism during the centuries following the conquests of Alexander the Great and the rise of Rome, we should ask ourselves which pagans were the most likely to do so.
The Greeks dominated the Hellenistic world, and the success and appeal of their culture was so overwhelming that large numbers of the Jews in Palestine became ardent Hellenizers, incorporating pagan elements into their lifestyle and eventually sparking the Maccabean revolt against such detested foreign influences. So it seems very unlikely that substantial numbers of Greeks or Greek-influenced groups would have converted to Judaism when the evidence is that the flow of quasi-converts was far stronger in the opposite direction. And the long history of bitter hostility between the very large Greek and Jewish populations of Alexandria further undercuts the notion of numerous Greek converts.
Similarly, the world-conquering Romans of the Republic ruled Palestine, and there seems no evidence that any of them converted to Judaism or found that religion attractive, with Cicero’s remarks suggesting that the Jews were merely considered a disruptive and disreputable nationality. During the early Empire, the Romans brutally crushed several Jewish revolts and although some elite Romans were attracted to the religion, the Jewish population across the Roman world had already become very large by that point, with no indication that it had been swelled by Roman converts.
So if it seems rather unlikely that substantial numbers of either Greeks or Romans had converted to Judaism prior to the birth of Christ, what was the probable source of the huge number of such apparent converts?
An intriguing possibility presents itself. The ancient Judeans were a Semitic people, closely related in language and culture to the neighboring Canaanites, primarily distinguished by their fiercely monotheistic religion. And by far the greatest and most important of these Canaanite peoples were the Phoenicians, whose coastal city-states included Tyre, Sidon, and Byblos, and who centuries earlier had founded Carthage as a North African colony on the coast of Tunisia. These Punic peoples—the Phoenicians and Carthaginians—were renowned as the greatest merchants of the ancient world, and they had successfully established a far-flung trading empire long before the rise of Classical Greece or Rome, an empire that endured for nearly a thousand years. Their business activities had also made them great innovators, and the Greeks credited them with having invented the Alphabet, which was later borrowed and adapted by all other peoples.
The Phoenician cities had eventually been subjugated by the large Semitic land empires of the Assyrians and the Babylonians, becoming tributary vassals, and this status continued under the Persian Empire, which relied upon the Phoenicians to provide most of its navy. But during Alexander the Great’s successful campaign to conquer Persia, he destroyed Tyre and any residue of Phoenician independence was permanently lost under his Hellenistic successors.
By this same era, Carthage had established a large North African empire in the Western Mediterranean, including many colonies of its own, and had probably become the largest and wealthiest city of the ancient world. But during the following century, the Punic Wars against Rome ended with Carthage’s total defeat and the loss of all of its territories, ultimately culminating in its final destruction in 146 BC.
We know that the Israelites had certainly had regular contact with their nearby Phoenician cousins. According to the Bible, King Solomon relied upon the skilled artisans of Tyre for his building projects, and a later king of Israel married into the ruling dynasty of that same city. Although these particular historical incidents seem quite plausible, I think a much more realistic perspective is that the wealthy, sophisticated merchants of Phoenicia regarded the Israelites as their rustic country cousins, probably poor and ignorant and fanatically religious with their monotheistic creed.
However, once Phoenicia had permanently fallen under the alien rule of the Hellenistic heirs of Alexander and the surviving Carthaginians had been incorporated into the empire created by their bitter Roman enemies, it is easy to imagine that many members of both those Punic populations might have gradually become drawn towards a messianic religion such as Judaism espoused by a closely-related Semitic people. According to modern estimates, Carthage’s North African empire probably included 3-4 million inhabitants at its peak, easily explaining the source of so many of the apparent Jewish converts who later appeared in that same part of the world.
Alexandria was the largest and most sophisticated city in the Eastern portion of Rome’s empire and one-third of its million residents were Jews, often locked in communal strife with the one-third who were Greek. It seems far more likely that these urbanized Jews were the descendants of Phoenician converts rather than Judean peasant farmers who had somehow been transformed into city-dwellers in such huge numbers. The very large Jewish community in Cyprus off the coast of Lebanon also seems likely to have had similar roots. Indeed, Michael Grant noted that as early as 6 AD a leading Jewish rabble-rouser involved in anti-Greek agitation in Palestine bore the distinctly Punic name of Hannibal.
The Palestinian Jews had no sea-faring tradition nor any history of colonization and were never known as merchants, with their most notable characteristic being their religious fanaticism and the violent rebellions it regularly inspired. But by the time of the early Roman Empire, we find enormous Jewish populations in coastal trading cities and islands, with Josephus making the (probably exaggerated) claim that 500,000 Jews lived in Cyrenaica on the Libyan coast, not far from destroyed Carthage. How plausible is it that Judean peasants could have migrated to all those distant locations in such large numbers, or had suddenly become the successful merchants and traders that many of these Jews seemed to be?
Outside the vicinity of the Middle East, those regions that later became centers of large Jewish populations were Spain and portions of the North African coast, both of which had been Carthaginian territory, a very suggestive pattern. And even as the Jewish population of the Roman Empire grew larger and became an increasing topic of discussion in the histories of that era, any mention of the residual Phoenicians or Carthaginians became less and less frequent, with those two historical trends possibly being connected.
Furthermore, conversion to Judaism required adult circumcision, a very painful and sometimes dangerous process that functioned as a major deterrent to potential adherents, and by foregoing that requirement, Christianity was able to greatly swell its ranks of Gentile converts. But Herodotus and some other ancient sources claimed that the Phoenicians already practiced circumcision, which would have made it much easier for them to become Jews.
The cities of the Phoenicians were located in present-day Lebanon and much of that country’s population are their direct descendants. For centuries, the Lebanese, whether living at home or in their far-flung diaspora, have been widely regarded as some of the world’s shrewdest businessmen and traders, surely reflecting that Phoenician heritage and its enduring traditions. But although the Jews of Judea never had any such reputation, the Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews certainly did, further suggesting that their true origins lay with a different Semitic people.
Sand spent a few pages discussing the possibility of Jewish converts from among Phoenicians and Carthaginians, but he failed to give the idea the importance it deserved, instead devoting many times more space to the far less plausible Khazar ancestry of the European Jews. Indeed, his discussion was so meager that the issue was never mentioned in the long Wikipedia page devoted to his book nor in any of the reviews that I read. And although Sand cited a French work from 1962 that had briefly asserted the possibility, I have never seen the hypothesis mentioned anywhere among modern writers. For example, Paul Johnson’s widely praised 1987 bestseller A History of the Jews runs over 650 pages, but neither “Phoenician” nor “Carthaginian” appear anywhere in its index.
Although there seems no indication that this origin theory had ever circulated within the Jewish community, strong sympathy for those other Semitic peoples has been quite common. For two thousand years, Jews have regarded the Romans as their most hated enemy, the foreign nation that conquered and oppressed them, brutally subdued their repeated revolts, and demolished their Second Temple, the central shrine of their religion. But more than a century before it seized Jerusalem, Rome itself had nearly been destroyed by Carthage during the Second Punic War, so throughout history many Jews have greatly admired that kindred Semitic empire. During that war, the Carthaginians had been led by Hannibal, widely regarded as one of history’s most brilliant military commanders, who repeatedly destroyed far superior Roman armies before the weight of their greater resources finally overwhelmed him. Hannibal later fled overseas, offering his services to all enemies of Rome, and many years afterward when he was about to fall into Roman hands, he chose suicide by poison rather than captivity, thus explaining the name of the Israeli government’s controversial “Hannibal Directive.” For related reasons, Sigmund Freud explained that as a Jew he had always regarded Hannibal as one of his personal heroes.
So unless modern DNA testing has become sufficiently precise to distinguish the genetics of the ancient Judeans from that of their close Phoenician cousins, I think the latter group should be treated as a leading candidate for the true origin of the modern Jews, including both the Sephardics of Spain and the male line of the Ashkenazis of Eastern Europe.
I wish I could take personal credit for this bold, seemingly persuasive hypothesis that solves many different puzzles, but I can’t. Nearly fifty years ago I happened to read The Outline of History, the sweeping 1920 history of the world by British polymath H.G. Wells, whose narrative stretches from the origins of life to the end of the world war, and he devoted a couple of paragraphs in its 1,200 pages to presenting this exact theory of Jewish origins, which he regarded as so plausible as to almost be self-evidently true. In 2011, Moorjani et al. detected 3%–5% sub-Saharan African ancestry in all eight of the diverse Jewish populations (Ashkenazi Jews, Syrian Jews, Iranian Jews, Iraqi Jews, Greek Jews, Turkish Jews, Italian Jews) that they analyzed.
The timing of this African admixture among all Jewish populations was identical.
The exact date was not determined, but it was estimated to have taken place between 1,600 and 3,400 years ago. These findings the authors explained as evidence regarding the common origin of these 8 main Jewish groups.
“It is intriguing that the Mizrahi Irani and Iraqi Jews—who are thought to descend at least in part from Jews who were exiled to Babylon about 2,600 years ago share the signal of African admixture.

If you read the article, you would know that it is not my claim. Quite the opposite: I claim that Jewish exclusive monotheism (the jealous god who hates all other gods, call them demons, and wants to destroy their temples, from the city gods to the family gods) is a corruption of the natural, inclusive monotheism that we call polytheism. There were never Europeans without the notion of a supreme, cosmic God (or Goddess). Abrahamic monotheism (Islam included, of course) means the death of God, in the sense of the seed of atheism, because educated, rational people just cannot buy it. Yahweh is just not credible in the role of God.

After the II -I BC glory, the Library entered on a downward slope. Starting with I AD, the only work was compilation and commentaries about commentaries about compilation of the great writers of old. No inspiration at all.
The scholars (like today “university professors & doctors”) were interested in booze and f..ing. When they needed dinars for this activities they sold some scrolls. Little by little at the end of III century the Library was dilapidated. It counted that two roman emperors Aurelian and Diocletian when they took Alexandria they devastate also the building and the whole area of the Library. Coincidently they were persecutor of Christians (IX and X persecution as it is known in history). Seems that they dislike books also. Where were the philosopher emperors? In imagination, of course.
Starting with IV century AD Library was nothing more than a shadow of past. But, probably remained something if Umar, the qalif, heated city bath with scrolls. Seems that the qalif was an ecologist guy and in love with warm water more than science.
It’s an excelent paradigm of what happened with the ancient world: it was dead, decaying, nobody except one, giving a sh..t about their wisdom. The emperors were nothing more than a bunch of dumb drunkard soldiers. The scholars were emptied by any inspiration or vigor, a shame for the great glory of the past. The commoners were probably a sort of orcish. The final blow was given by the heretics and above all by mahomedans.
The only one exception were Christians. That’s because Christianity attracted those who were the most full of hope and vigor and received (as a byproduct of sacraments) vitality and energy. Christians wanted to save what was precious from the old days especially because they valued wisdom and recognize the glitterings of truth. They understood the inherently dignity of human and also the Love of God.
Without their work, if Europe would have survived to this day (which I doubt), all of us europeans would have lived in caves or in trees, hunting rats with bows. Of course, except mr. Guyenot, who near his academical hut, would have stir in the cauldron making a magnificent rat soup a la gallia

All other nations but the Jews had heroes, in the Greek sense of special dead who are honored and expected to still care for their community. They overcame death. Romulus is the best example. In that sense, Jesus is a Greek hero. But the big difference is that no Greek hero was expected to come back and save the world (by destroying it first). Christians inherited the Jewish inability to accept reality: The Messiah failed, but that’s because he was supposed to, so in fact he won, and he’ll come back and prove it. Infantile, as you say! Likewise, Jerusalem is utterly destroyed in 70 AD and in the 130th, but soon, you’ll see a brand new Jerusalem float down from heaven, while Rome will be consumed by flames.
Seen positively, this refusal to accept reality is also a great determination to make reality; it is a great strength.
