In the Emperor’s New Clothes, only the little boy can say that the emperor is naked. The good news about yesterday’s speech by Netanyahu to a joint meeting of Congress is that lots of media are taking on that boy’s role, and pointing out the nudity: exclaiming over the fact that a foreign leader came into our house of government to try and overrule our president on foreign policy. Chris Matthews was especially forceful, describing it as a takeover. While a New York Times article said that Democrats have to choose between “loyalty to the Jewish state” and the president.

But journalists have a bigger job than merely exclaiming. They must explain to readers why this outrage took place. Why did Netanyahu get this platform? The answer is the power of the Israel lobby inside our politics. And while there was some talk about the Christian Zionist component of the lobby compelling Republicans to show up, no one could explain why so many Democrats– about 175 of them– sat still for this insult to the president. They did so because of the importance of the Jewish part of the lobby inside the Democratic Party, epitomized by Alan Dershowitz in the gallery. This was surely obvious to viewers. But the media were silent on that score.

Here is some of the coverage I’m talking about. A piece at the New York Times saying that Netanyahu had issued an effective policy challenge to Obama pointed out the strangeness of the spectacle–

Mr. Netanyahu’s hotly disputed address constituted a remarkable moment in Washington: a foreign leader taking the podium before members of the House and Senate to argue strenuously against the policies of the sitting American president. In doing so, the Israeli leader was essentially urging lawmakers to trust him — not Mr. Obama — when it comes to preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon…

Times reporters Julie Hirschfeld Davis and Michael D. Shear then openly spoke of Democrats whose “loyalty to the Jewish state” is competitive with their support for the president:

For Democrats who have long viewed themselves as supporters of Israel, Mr. Netanyahu’s speech sought to impress upon them the likelihood that they will eventually need to make an awkward, painful choice between the president of their country and their loyalty to the Jewish state.

Why is that choice awkward and painful? I would like to hear why those Democrats feel that “loyalty.” Why aren’t we hearing about Haim Saban and other leading funders of the Democratic Party? Why aren’t Chris Matthews, Jon Stewart, Anderson Cooper and Chris Hayes interviewing John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, the scholars who wrote the book The Israel Lobby?

Daily Show Full Episodes, More Daily Show Videos, Comedy Central Full Episodes

Stewart did a lot of Jewish shtik about the Netanyahu speech yesterday. He called it the longest blowjob a Jewish man has ever received. But he tried to put it on the Republicans– “the state of the union speech the Republican wanted.” Hold on. As the Times informed us: “Some Democrats who are strong supporters of Israel praised Mr. Netanyahu’s speech.”

Stewart briefly hinted at the power of the lobby when he played Obama’s rather-restrained response to the insult:

[whispering] That’s how powerful Israel is. Their prime minister comes here, publicly slaps Obama in the face and the president’s response is, That’s OK, in fact, everyone should know, I’m buying him gloves, so when he hits me, it doesn’t hurt his hand as much.

Good that Stewart got in US aid to Israel.

Respecting the Israel-loving climate on the Democratic side, Chris Matthews was very careful about the speech. He praised it lavishly as a masterful performance. And then he blew his top. First yesterday afternoon:

This man from a foreign government walked into the United States legislative chamber and tried to take over foreign policy…. He said you should trust me, not your president on this… I’m the man you should trust, I’m your true leader on this question of U.S. geopolitics….

It was a startling situation… It’s a remarkable day when the leaders of the opposition in Congress allowed this to happen. Think it through, what country in the world would let a foreign leader come in and attempt to wrest from the president control of U.S. foreign policy? And that’s what the applause was about today…. This was a takeover attempt by Netanyahu with his complying American partners to take American foreign policy out of the hands of the president.

Last night on Hardball, Matthews also blew up– and asked the all-important Why? question:

Can you name another time in American history that we have invited someone into the US Congress chamber to criticize a president’s foreign policy? I can’t think of one. I’ve never heard of that done before. Has it ever been done before? Why now?

Why do we break a tradiiton”? Why do we do something all of a sudden for the first time in history let someone from a foreign government come into our governing chamber and tell us the president is wrong?

No answer to his own questions.

The New York Times was also opaque. Its editorial board exclaimed over the spectacle but then had no words to explain it.

With Republicans and most Democrats as his props, he entered the House of Representatives to thunderous applause on Tuesday, waving his hand like a conquering hero and being mobbed by fawning lawmakers as he made his way to the lectern.

Even Washington doesn’t often see this level of exploitative political theater; it was made worse because it was so obviously intended to challenge President Obama’s foreign policy.

I suppose I should be happy that the press is at least exclaiming over the outrage, and that it’s now obvious to Americans. The Democratic lib-left is now taking on the Israel lobby, though not by name. Stewart castigated Netanyahu for pushing the Iraq war 12 years ago, and Matthews went further, saying that Netanyahu had worked with the US neoconservatives:

Let’s be honest here. Bibi Netanyahu would have a chunk more credibility on this peace-and-war issue if he hadn’t been blowing his bugle over the heads of the Bushes and the neo-cons as we rushed into Baghdad.

His complaint about Iran’s grab of other countries would have more blare to it if it hadn’t been that he, Bibi Netanyahu, had not been totally “in” on the war that turned Iraq into an Iranian pawn.

Dana Milbank in the Washington Post called out Netanyahu for all but committing the Congress to go to war.

[Nancy Pelosi’s] agitation was not difficult to comprehend. It’s a rare thing for Congress to declare war — and rarer still to do it at the request of a foreign leader.

It wasn’t literally a war declaration, of course, just symbolic applause from Republicans, and several Democrats, for Netanyahu’s bid to scuttle U.S. negotiations with Iran.

So that’s the plus side of the coverage yesterday. The political dynamics are so obvious that the American people are feeling outraged. A friend writes from abroad:

Yesterday, the US was not only publicly, but globally insulted…. Now that the dual loyalty business is out of the closet, I hope the US won’t return to its usual induced coma.

Commenters on the New York Times editorial are clued in to the whole charade. ScottW:

That is Bibi’s stick and it never changes. Iran is the boogeyman and while Israel has untold numbers of nuclear weapons, has never signed the nuclear nonproliferation agreement, and permits no inspectors in its country, the Iranian’s somehow pose a greater threat. Pure baloney.

The congressmen who gave Bibi an ovation for a speech that offers nothing new, only the old, is disgraceful. Are they trying to placate the Jewish Lobby in hopes of securing hundreds of millions in donations?

Fortunately for the process, neither Bibi nor any of his cheerleading representatives are involved in trying to reach a deal with Iran that will bring us into the 21st Century.

TDW:

If this doesn’t prove to the world that the United States is nothing more than Israel’s puppet state I don’t know what will. Remember this is the guy who appeared on all the Sunday morning blab fests telling us about Saddam’s WMDs prior to our adventure in Iraq.. The paranoia, ignorance, and xenophobia displayed by the republicans can all be traced to their master “President” Bibi. I’m ashamed of my country today because of this disgrace.

Alison:

Every Congressman who contributed to Netanyahu’s photo op and campaign rally from within our hallowed hall did a disservice to our nation, our presidency, and our voters. We need their names and we need them held publicly accountable for their choice.

Banzai:

Wow. Looking at that picture, I’m hard pressed to believe Netanyahu is not the American President, and those beaming congressmen are not reprensentatives of the American people.

The NSA should be alarmed at this enormous influence of a foreign country on our legislative body.

Thanks to Susie Kneedler for pointing out all the progress, and to Annie Robbins.

I think it was a signal to Obama from the GOP Congress that if he tries any more of his extralegal BS, and Bammie has certainly said he’s free to do what he damned well pleases his last two years, that he is going to be like dirt by the other branch of government and utterly disrespected. The GOP members in the House and Senate have to be sick of this guy by now. I was tired of him years ago.

If you take the podium away from a guy who always wants to be the center of attention (Obama) and give it to one of his rivals, it will sting our pesky, narcissistic Prezzy’s ego worse than a taser. At least a few members of the Republican leadership know him well enough to be aware of this, which is why the invite went out to Bibi.

Bammie’s a worse attention whore than Teddy Roosevelt ever was with his ‘bride at every wedding and corpse at every funeral,’ personality.

I want US citizens to know that the rest of the World is having a hearty laugh at this spectacle of US shame. As the US loaded up the post-coup Ukrainian parliament with its yahoos, so is this Israeli yahoo putting the Congress ass flies into their place. As if 70 years of blood and treasure confiscation for the benefit of a foreign country was not enough!?

I have this image of a biggest fish eating a medium fish eating a small fish, or I could be a bit more vulgar (worse than the longest bj mentioned in the article).

It does not make the little fish at the end of the food chain better off, but a claim to cosmic justice could be laid: the US is getting it in its behind as well.

Foreign viewers of The Speech must be mystified by the feckless Congress. The Senators and Representatives did themselves no favors by their bizarre behaviour with all the posturing and Stalinesque clapping. If you were watching the episode on any number of foreign outlets ranging from RT to Al Jazeera to the BBC to take your pick, you’d be joined by people saddened by the spectacle of American idolatry. Then pick up an American newspaper and try to make sense of the divergence between perception and reality, or are we still making our own Empirical reality?

The whole episode was worse than a bad Kabuki play.

Isn’t this bogus when Obama himself is a shill for Jewish power? It’s J-street that is using him as the ‘good cop’ in Iranian negotiations while Netanhayu plays the ‘bad cop’.

Also, as Lib Jews use Obama to negotiate with Iran, they fear that Americans will become sympathetic to Iran and be less alarmed about the security of Israel.
So, they have Netanhayu sound the alarm even as they look for a deal with Iran.

If they a get a deal, Iran will agree to no nukes. But they can also work with neocons to send a message that Israel has been sold down the river(when in fact the deal with Iran) has no impact on Israel at all.

It’s certainly an extraordinary event in history. I can’t think of any historical precedent for the Israeli-American relationship. The foreign policy of a great power is very highly influenced by a small country on the other side of the globe. It doesn’t seem real but it is.

Clearly there is little loyalty to America on the part of much of Congress. On the other hand polls indicate that most Americans doubt that Obama has any love of or loyalty to America. The fate of the American people is in the hands of politicians who view ordinary Americans with a mixture of contempt and indifference.

  17. @Zach

“A ‘man from a foreign government walked into the United States legislative chamber and tried to take over foreign policy.’ It’s OK when Churchill does it, though.”

No–that’s a misleading comparison. Churchill may have had the “last lion” image but he was a beggar and a pleader in his relationship with the US. Also, FDR and other American leaders judged–independently of any argument Churchill could make–that the US should work to involve itself in war against Germany and Japan. And although the events of decades previous that led up to WW II were complex, it’s hard to argue that the US would have been better off with Axis victories. As the war went on, Churchill became more and more marginalized, and after the war, we essentially used financial extortion to drive the dismantling of the Empire and Imperial Preference. Churchill got little more than a handshake. This kicking to the curb was capped off with Ike’s smackdown of Churchill’s designated successor, Eden.

The arrogant and deeply off-putting Bibi, on the other hand, pursues a dead-end strategic agenda any connection with which is toxic for a world power that aspires to sustain its dominance. And yet the disloyal lobby is able to gull or intimidate the majority into submission. Bibi may have managed to align Sunni leadership with him temporarily, but Israel is an albatross around our neck. And the role of the domestic pro-Israel disloyals has no counterpart in the 1940s.

The nearest counterpart for the current Israel-related fiasco, is probably the disastrous Fed policy in the 1920s to support sterling and the Bank of England. But even there, it was all behind closed doors and lacked the repulsive optics of the imperious leader of a small country swaying a pack of witless hyenas to his destructive cause on the floor of the US Congress.

Churchill was a glorious and glorified beggar for help. Bibi is an entitled demander of policy servitude who can never provide the US with the kind of strategic utility that Britain has in the course of the last century.

The US-Israel relationship is like Thucydides’ Melian dialogue turned on its head.

  18. @anowow

You’re right that the US entry into WW I is a better analogy to our ongoing Israel-related fiasco than Zach’s focus on Churchill/WW II.

  19. @donut

    “Iran delenda est”.

Barry’s anti-Putin policy is an obedience to the Jews who control him. It’s been a Jewish War on Russia. If not for Jewish designs on Russia, US-EU-Russia relations would be great.

Barry doesn’t sufficiently kiss Netanhayu’s ass because that role is reserved for the GOP. As for Obama, he more-than-sufficiently kisses J-Street’s ass, and J-Street is just AIPAC with a (deceptive) ‘human face’.

It is not all that difficult to understand the split in the Democratic Party. Declaring War against Iran would undermine the War against Russia…can’t have a war on two fronts….This is what the Joint Chief of Staffs has told the Kenya Foreigner. First things first…and the first thing is bumping off Putin…The declaration of War against Iran can wait for purely strategic reasons.

Chris Matthews is a Kenyan Foriegner groupie as is Jon Stewardt….their Pinup Girl was insulted by Bibi. Remember..the Kenyan Foriegner pinup girl gave the homosexual lobby homo marriage….and homos in the Boy Scouts….and forcing Conservative Christian Bakers into economic destitution and hate crime persecution. 24. Deign’s psychoanalysis is that their applause was less to do with the speech or Israel and far more to do with protesting the age of ascendent degeneracy in which we live. Sodomy has now become a civil rights cause. Even the most appalling forms of late-term abortion draw a yawn and a shrug. Little boys are kicked out of school for eating their Pop-Tarts into a gun shape. The current political regime is openly contemptuous of the country it rules, following the old liberal pattern of blackening the reputation of everything decent and promoting whatever is deformed and ugly under the perpetually waving banner of victimhood.

In the middle of that, a well-spoken representative of the old order steps up and says something with great clarity. Iran is a big problem, the world’s greatest sponsor of terrorism. And who could fail to know this is true, including those who like it?

So the Jew gets a series of standing ovations. In those standing Os, I see guys who are sick of pretending the new degeneracy is good. I see guys who are sick of pretending abortion is anything other than murder, who are sick of pretending sodomy is just another lifestyle, who are sick of the pretending the welfare crowd has nothing to be ashamed of, who are sick of the never-ceasing apology tour, who are angry at a foreign policy that forsakes ancient allies and obliges the nation to cow before her enemies and that is incapable of finding any connection between Islam and terrorism. I see people who are weary and disgusted by the whole general drift of western downward slide, led by men who never knew the first thing about the greatness that was America.

It was refreshing to them to hear Netanyahu stand up there are ever-so-courteously ram a thumb into the eye of the man who has come to personify a whole movement that hates America and all that was ever good about her.

The issue of the moment was Israel. But there was so much more to the moment than that.

He closed his remarks with the comment that Netanyahu considered himself like Churchill.

Someone should remind Bibi & the Israelis & AIPAC that Churchill lost the British empire, and that the loss was not an accident, it was FDR’s intention.

Christopher O’Sullivan chronicles how British hegemony in the Middle East was ceded to USA in The End of Empire: The Origins of American Power in the Middle East .

And Andrew Buchanan describes how FDR undermined the British position in Europe when he instructed Gen. Mark Clark to ignore the agreed-upon joint strategy to chase the Germans from Rome and trap then from escaping back to Germany. Clark was told to jump the gun and take Rome with only American forces, and to parade through Rome in the kind of obnoxious, triumphalist display (of American power) that was part of Clark’s vainglorious style. see http://www.c-span.org/video/?322137-1/discussion-us-engagement-italy-world-war-ii

“So he’s controlled by American Jews on one hand, and antagonistic to Israeli Jews at the same time?”

When was he ever antagonistic toward Israeli Jews? He did nothing about settlements. He didn’t condemn the bombing of Gaza. If anything, he sent Israel more military aid while Gaza was being turned into dust. And when Netanhayu arrived in the US some yrs back and hectored him, he sat there quietly.

Obama doesn’t like Netanhayu, but he’s never openly condemned him. But this has less to do with personal issues than the fact that Obama is slavish to J-Street Jews of the Democratic Party(who are, behind the scenes, very close to Neocon Jews of AIPAC). Obama hasn’t done anything that went against Israeli interests, but he hasn’t been as openly slavish to Israel as previous presidents have been. But this is what J-Street Jews want. When the likes of Bush, Palin, and Romney wave the Israeli flag, it gives the impression that Israel/Jews own America and that America can never be a fair broker in the world.

So, J-street Jews use Obama to play the role of ‘independent’ president, but in reality, he’s just pushing the ostensibly softer J-Street line.

As Iran is still around and will be for a long time, some Jews want to make a deal with Iran, especially as the failure to do so will bring Iran closer to Russia and China. Also, as Iraq and Syrai have been seriously damaged, Jews are less worried about the Shia Crescent.
So, they are making overtures to Iran. But Jews still want Americans to fear and hate Iran and feel that Israel is facing an EXISTENTIAL THREAT(!!!).
Jews want to come to some agreement with Iran but want Americans to feel that Obama the ‘secret Muslim’ threw Israel under the bus. This way, Jews get the deal(where Iran will never ever get nukes) but also have the support of angry Americans who feel that Israel will face an EXISTENTIAL THREAT(!!!). Jews are so smart, goyim are sooooo dumb.

Why can’t you see this? It’s gangster politics. It’s like what Barzini did in THE GODFATHER. He used the Tataglias to hit the Corleones while playing the role of honest broker.
Obama is a pimp of the Zio-Barzinis.

Don’t let your black pride get in the way of seeing Obama as some independent leader. He’s small potatoes.

Syria, we want Assad gone for the Jews but it’s not happening as long as Putin is in power. So he has to go first.

Once Putin is taken care of and Syria is history, then it will be Iran’s turn.

As far as Bibi’s speech goes, well Boehner had to do something since he sold his manhood to Obama and the Chambers of Commerce and was looking like a doomed Speaker being dependent on House Democrats to pass legislation. So he invites Bibi over as a distraction.

    It worked like a charm.

I doubt he’s actually “too lazy to get a haircut.” He probably just chooses to wear his hair long, grandpa. I actually shave mine off altogether (’cause its better than a combover). Its not 1962 anymore,* so people don’t really care how a man wears his hair.

*In most ways, that was a much better era, admittedly.

You certainly talk about Bibi, don’t you? Because Israel tries hard to avoid the important rules of Western civilization such as respect for international law. Moreover, the current US President’ meek resistance to a bully from a small ME country that is founded on mythology, does not make the President hateful towards the majority of the US population. But it is proper to say, that the tiny minority of the wealthy believers in the mythology of “chosen people” has been seething with hatred towards the current President of the US. This hatred makes the “double” citizens make bad mistakes such as playing one group of congresspeople against another. This tasteless spectacle made the majority of the US citizenry think that too much deference to a foreign bullying dignitary is plain treasonous. The next inevitable step is an extrapolation of the idea of the treasonous allegiance to a foreign country on the powerful Lobby.

  51. rod1963 says:

The media will not explain Congress’s loyalty to Bibi simply because big money Zionists vet candidates from both parties, especially presidential candidates – hence their pilgrimage to Israel during the primaries.

In layman’s terms the Zionists own our politicians which also explains our insane foreign policy decisions over the last 20 years.

That is excellent. These are such extraordinary times and Giuliani articulated the essence of the disease that has infected us. At this moment, Israel’s undeniable affronts to the U.S. recede far into the distance. And not each and every thing you identified went through every mind there but how can there not have been enthusiasm for an example of clear thinking from someone who lives in Realville, as Rush would say. And how could anyone not respond positively to someone who is a leader with the interests of his people at heart. He is the polar opposite of this utter freak we are cursed with.

Many informed people have made excellent points in this exercise in over analysis. However, I think you have caught the sigh inside the tempest, to use a possibly inapt image. You can see that Giuliani’s observation has resonated in many hearts. Something is not right with this curious crew at the top.

One way or another, I think you have hit on what might have been underneath the applause. Perhaps it was just an expression of hope that we might see something like that again here. Any kind of clarity is exhilarating, witness Coulter, West (Diana), Greenfield, Goudy and Sessions, inter alia.

Or, perhaps it was just an expression of anxiety over whatever Pres. Jarrett has negotiated for us. It’s an absolute certainty that it ignores U.S. interests and will only advance the interests of a dishonest, murderous, uncivilized regime of fanatics.

AIPAC inspires obedience in American politicians but I don’t think that explains what we saw. If you didn’t correctly explain it, you provided a heck of a distillation of present realities.

Of course some oppose him because they are American nationalists and do not see his policies as advantageous to the USA. And then there are some who just don’t like Jews.

Nationalism is the real no-no for the politically progressive.

Guilty on both counts . I look forward to the day a White tyrant (in the original meaning of the word ) comes along . Why not ? We are already enduring a tyranny(in the modern sense of the word). The Constitution has already been shitcanned , let’s not waste anymore time defending it .
We are in an American version of the Wiemar Republic . And the struggle is between the same forces : Marxists and Nationalists , the choice is between two opposing forces , either , or . To cling to the middle will only ensure that you are the first to go down .

We can admire lots of things, but that’s hardly the issue. What course should we be charting for ourselves (Americans)? Many people have admired the German army. But admiring it didn’t solve the problems it caused for us. “Hating Netanyahu” is simply short hand for dissatisfaction with the this thing we call the US-Israel relationship.

The problem with your post is that it doesn’t really tell us anything useful or purposeful. All we know is that you admire Israel and, I guess, Netanyahu. OK, fine, And then what?

“But just a subset of evangelicals subscribe to that [ Dispensationalism…that Jesus will Return with a Big Bang only when the Jewish State is god-knows what]. Others are motivated by their belief, rooted in scripture, that God always intended Israel for Jews and that honoring that and keeping Israel safe is a way of honoring God. God’s blessing of America, they feel, cannot be divorced from America’s backing of Israel”

What is not brought forward here is the general Protestant Softness on Israel for Biblical reasons. Thus, the Jewish Power is in a significant part based on Jew Money, Holocaust propaganda, Jewish Networking, ownership/control of the media, but the Fundamental Problem is the Religious connection. The US , and especially Repugnican voters, are Protestants who have been worshipping the Jews for a long time. It is not just the Fundamentalists, it is also the nice higher-end Episcopalians, and Lutherans, etc. who would never wear a star of david on their ties, but who nevertheless are wedded to the Jews, and give them a pass always. The only exception to this is the Divestment movement that seems to be growing, what with Israel’s unChristian behavior. But what the hey, what do they expect? New Testament behavior from Old Testament Jews…”kill them all, even their little ones?.”

But one glaring fault line lies in allowing the propaganda from the various Jeiwsh groups from 1930s or earlier but more so after the Biltmore Hotel onfernece in NY in 1942 , to penetrate the core religious faith of Christiniaty and turn it upside down . 69. Technomad says:

A lot of the pro-Israeli sentiment in Congress is from fear of AIPAC and its smear brigades. However, a lot of it can also be traced pretty directly to decades (dating back to well before WWII) of uncritically pro-Jewish coverage of the Palestine issue. And many Americans who normally wouldn’t much care have Jewish friends who tend to go utterly ballistic at the slightest hint of criticism of Israel (in many Jewish circles, worship of the God of Israel has been replaced by worship of the State of Israel; you can eat all the non-kosher food you want, marry out of the tribe, and never once darken a synagogue’s door, but as long as you’re pro-Israel, you’re OK in their book) and these people just go along because it’s easier than dealing with a histrionic temper tantrum. Ann Coulter explained a similar process in one of her books, only in that case it was the McCarthy-haters getting their own way because they cared so much and the other side didn’t care that much.

You also do have the moronic evangelical Christians who get their beliefs from The Late Great Planet Earth and other books of that general ilk. Hal Lindsey has been discredited, again and again, and his books continue to sell like hotcakes (although, for some strange reason, The 1980s—Countdown to Armageddon is hard to find these days. Wonder why?) Mencken saw through these frauds in the 1920s, and after a period of quiescence, they burst back onto the scene in the late 1970s, in the wake of Jimmy Carter. Yet another thing to blame Jimmeh for.
