You don’t even need to question the official data. Just look at the official data intelligently. Understand proportions and percentages, understand modularity, understand how viruses and immunity really work. The official data for USA shows a much less drastic picture than the media paints.

Italy is a different story, because Italy failed to control its borders. Salvini had tried, but he was kicked out last year and the new government went all in with openness.

The CDC’s coronavirus data simply doesn’t ‘hang together’:
• one page (Cases in U.S. ) says that the total number of cases in the US was 85,356 at 4pm on March 26th;
• a second page (Testing in U.S.) says that there had only been ~112k tests performed at 4pm on March 26th – for a cases/tests ratio of a little under 75.8%.

Nobody believes that the infection rate is anywhere near that high at this stage: if it was, there would be absolutely no point in any attempts at countermeasures.

By stark contrast, this privately-run data aggregator shows that the total tested is over half a million higher (626,667), with 99,447 ‘positives’ and 527,220 ‘negatives’ [1] as of last night – which gives a cases/tests ratio of 15.9% (still an overestimate given the low quality of the test, the fact that US is using an over-predicting test on selectively high-probability patients… which defeats the purpose of the test as an analytical tool).

So funny that Yanks were pointing the finger at China’s early data reporting, when the US’s peak disease-control bureaucrats are too busy posturing on TV to get their data squared away.

Similarly, suppose a random commenter on this website had been the U.S. President when this started 2+ months ago. And, a random group of commenters had comprised the U.S. Congress. Italy is a different story, because Italy uses a very inclusive definition of ‘covid death’ (if you died with covid, not of it, you’re still in the count.

Note that if coronavirus was the actual cause of death for only 12% of Italian victims, then the reported ‘corona deaths’ number is 833% of the valid number. That’s significantly worse than the ‘out by 88%’ mentioned by Off-Guardian, because Off-Guardian used the wrong denominator.

Do the arithmetic yourself: if a number is actually 12, but is reported as 100, then the reported number is 100/12 = 8.33× the actual number, which is 833%.

The error is 88/12 = = 7.33×, or 733%.

Which ever way you slice it, it’s more than 88%.

“Data” is perhaps the wrong word.

Politics and fear dominate every single aspect of this matter.

All we need is an actuary to tell us what the excess deaths are in Italy. This idea that we can rely on these people enumerating the CV fatalities who have every incentive to minimize the numbers. After all, if the numbers were double or triple what they are reporting, people would be more agitated, harder to control.

On average 11k die every week in Italy. (any cause)
On average over 1k of them die of the flu. (not Corona)
These past couple weeks over 1k are dying while testing positive for covid19.
The daily Corona death totals from Italy aren’t necessarily dying FROM COVID, they’re the number of dying while positive for Corona. (90% of those are over 70 yrs old)
So in reality Italy currently, is indeed, actually overstating the true number of Corona victims as it is. This without the agitation or the harder to control populace that you fear.

In other news, the Finance Minister of the German stage of Hesse may be another victim of corona-chan – it’s not entirely clear that it was covid19, or won’t be until tests are complete.

There’s been some delay in testing, due to problems of scraping a large enough sample off his genetic material off the train tracks (and the undercarriage of the train, I assume).

That can’t account for the obvious evidence of excess death occurring, and the testimony to that effect from the local mayors of the towns there.

On separate issue, I really enjoyed listening to your guest Joshua Blakeney the few times you interviewed him. Does he have his own website or blog or anything? It seems like he’s fallen off the map the past few years.

BTW, I agree this is total over-reaction to a problem that appears no worse than annual flu or H1N1, based on the available data. The damage to economy may be greater in the short and long run than deaths of mainly elderly people who have other chronic conditions.

Thank you for the update on Joshua. Hope he is doing well, though it is sad to lose him on these issues. He was a good reporter and had some unique insights on Japan, Jews, WWII, Germany, and indigenous people, among other topics. I also liked that he didn’t buy into the muslim-bashing from so many on the alt-right, and imagined a Christian-Muslim alliance based on shared values and, more importantly, as a bulwark to Jewish power.
