I’ve only been around Phil Anschutz a few times. My impressions on those occasions was that he was a run-of-the-mill arrogant billionaire. He was used to people courting him and he addressed them condescendingly from the lofty height of his own wealth.

I’ve never met Ryan McKibben, who runs part of Anschutz’s media group. But stories about him have circulated around Washington over the years. The stories suggest that he is an ordinary corporate bureaucrat — with all the petty vanities and the lack of interest in ideas that go with the type.

This week, Anschutz and McKibben murdered The Weekly Standard, the conservative opinion magazine that Anschutz owned. They didn’t merely close it because it was losing money. They seemed to have murdered it out of greed and vengeance.

John Podhoretz, one of the magazine’s founders, reports that they actively prevented potential buyers from coming in to take it over and keep it alive. They apparently wanted to hurt the employees and harvest the subscription list so they could make money off it. And Anschutz, being a professing Christian, decided to close the magazine at the height of the Christmas season, and so cause maximum pain to his former employees and their families.

The closing of The Weekly Standard is being told as a Trump story, as all stories must be these days. The magazine has been critical of Trump, and so this is another example of the gradual hegemony of Trumpism over the conservative world. That is indeed the backdrop to what happened here.

But that’s not the whole story. In reality, this is what happens when corporate drones take over an opinion magazine, try to drag it down to their level and then grow angry and resentful when the people at the magazine try to maintain some sense of intellectual standards. This is what happens when people with a populist mind-set decide that an uneducated opinion is of the same value as an educated opinion, that ignorance sells better than learning.

In that sense, the closing of The Standard resembles Chris Hughes’s destruction of the old New Republic. This is what happens when the commercial forces trying to dumb down the American media run into a pocket of people trying to resist those forces.

I was on staff when The Standard was founded, by Bill Kristol, Podhoretz and Fred Barnes. They gathered the most concentrated collection of talent I have ever been around. The first masthead featured Charles Krauthammer, P.J. O’Rourke, Robert Kagan, David Frum, Chris Caldwell, Matt Labash, Tucker Carlson and the greatest political writer of my generation, Andrew Ferguson.

  1. These magazines are vanity projects for their patrons; nobody could make a decent living out of them under a strictly competitive, for-profit model.

The Weekly Standard’s writers are older men who are used to a lot more money sloshing around their “industry.” You don’t get to be rich rich paying retail. At some point even the rich get tired of paying upper bourgeois salaries for what Steve Sailer or Fred Reed will deliver off whatever they scratch up from, say, Social Security, some well-timed real estate ownership, and what their wives bring in.

So the owner decided to ditch the old, saggy, high-maintenance Weekly Standard for a cheaper, younger, hotter! model. Naturally, he doesn’t want to leave the old asset out there for somebody to grab. It’s “red ocean,” not “blue ocean.”

  2. Brooks’ time would be better spent discussing who killed The New York Times

  3. The Deplorables and the Bernie Bros are the only constituencies that matter where electoral politics is concerned. Neither reads the Weekly Standard. Put it out of its misery.

  4. SafeNow says:

Among the excellent Weekly Standard lost voices is Christopher Caldwell; in my opinion there is no better columnist in the world. Where can we read his columns? There are infrequent Claremont Institute essays; where else? Perhaps it is too soon to know where Mr. Caldwell, and others, will land.

David Brooks had that rare gift. He could convince people he was a conservative all the while pimping for big government and crony capitalism. A Rockefeller Foundation kind of conservative. The Weekly Standard is dead and happily there’s nothing Brooks or any of his ilk can do about it. All neo cons should now crawl back into that Democrat Trotskyite hole from whence they came.

Passing off the Jew, David Brooks as a conservative by the NYT is an intellectual insult. The NYT did the same with his predecessor – William Safire. Being pro-Israel and its wars, is Not being a American conservative.

  13. @anon

The Standard was conservative, but it frequently dissented from the Republican establishment and delighted in modern pop culture. The staff was never unanimous about anything. The many flavors of conservatism were hashed out in its pages. If it stood for anything, I would say it stood for this: that the good life consists of being an active citizen and caring passionately about politics; that it also consists of knowing something about Latin American fiction, ancient Greek culture and social impact of modern genetics; that it also consists of delighting in the latest good movies and TV shows, the best new cocktails and the casual pleasures of life.

Maybe Brooks could specify how the NYT fails to meet this definition of conservative.

  14. It’s a Trump story to the extent that Trump finally exposed to the public that hadn’t already figured it out that neoconservatism is a total fraud. There is no use any more in peddling this idiotic and dangerous farce because no one is buying it any more and it is being folded into the Jewish neo liberal tent where it always belonged.

A mischling Jew, Brooks , writes a story about a very Jewish magazine, a magazine devoted to Israel, and because of its Jewish pedigree, or at least like Brooks, half Jew and half stew of Diverse but probably Christian more or less writers (full disclosure: I don’t know ). And Tucker Carlson?!!, man am I out of it!)….and,….and Brooks never uses the J -Word in his article?

Something pretty gevelte-fishy about it. And none of the comments here bring it up? What’s the matter with all the anti-Semites on this list anyway? How about smell a rat?

Maybe Anschutz is an Anti-Semite! and that accounts for his rubbing it in over the Christmas season, especially with Tucker safely gone over to Fox, still sorta Fox Jews, but Tolerant enough to allow Tucker to get pretty close to the Jew-Rail at times, (formerly known at the Third rail).

Tucker seems to be unreliable these says, even if he was so at the Weekly Standard…dunno ’bout that either. Tucker and the rest of the crew at Fox never talk about Israel…almost never. Seems like it takes about 200 dead Palestinians to show up on Fox radar. One dead Israeli equals about 200 Palestinians dead, like a few months ago.

This said, a dead Weekly Standard is a great Christmas gift to White Christians as well as Arab Christians.

More mental action around JEWS and our current affairs. Maybe Weekly Standard was retired as endangering the Jewish Power and the Russia! thesis.

Tucker Carlson tonight and RUSSIA ! as he yells it these days. Tucker asks guest Russia expert…

    Dec 18 at 10:55 PM

Stephen Cohen, an historian of Russia , why all the Russia hysteria from Dems? Cohen says he does not know, but that maybe it is related to the effort (Neocons not remarked by Cohen) of the foreign policy usuals to contain Russian influence and that Putin is the main guy they dislike intensely, after having thought Russia would be compliant under Yeltsin, etc. This is the old Big Power Politics argument …which is not without merit. But…there is a more parsimonious, or Occam’s Razor type of argument…ITS THE JEWS (!).

Tucker played a clip of MSNBC Brian Williams and his house Negro theorizing a vast Russian plan to subvert the US with propaganda and to make it a pushover for a Russian takeover. John Birch Society, KKK, David Duke, Alt Right and Richard Spencer (!), White Nationalists and Trump all conspiring to welcome the Ruskies. Brian Williams (do I have his name right?) warmly thanks the Negro for his insight.

Well, despite the entertaining jive of said negror, the LIb-Rad media is indeed crazed but you have to watch it to really get it. I usually only get the clips from CNN and MSNBC which show up on Fox, but I saw a piece today wherein a claimed new discovery of a worm in Australia was recognized and given the name of wormus Trumpalisis, or the like. I guess that was a joke.

Conspiracy Theory: Since all the Lib-Rad nnegro/mexer lovin’ TV networks are Jew owned, and ditto the Jewyorktimes, etc, etc., the old thesis proposed by Yours Truly a while back, that it is ALL the Jew thang, I herein repeat.

The Jews hate Russia for throwing them out. Stalin started throwing them out, and Stalin killed off the Trots as a political force, yet with many surviving to became the neocons of today and the Trots of the 1960s and forward in the US and Europe. Putin threw out the Jewish Power…the Matriarchs… I mean the Oligarchs. Ouch! Some of then made it to Israel with their loot and some didn’t.

Just read my first conspiracy book on JFK…Michael Collins Piper. Israel dun it. Maybe the Jews did do it since Piper has lots of stories about Kennedy wanting to keep nukes away from Jews, etc.

So, the Neocon movement of the last few decades, bringing you the Iraq wars, etc. really nobody disputes except neocons, were done of , by and for the Jews/Judenstaat.

Putin and Russia don’t much like being surrounded by Nato, etc, just like Russia did not like it when Turkey , etc. had our nukes pointed at them….ca. Cuban Missile Crisis.

etc. Russia has legitimate national interests in Ukraine, Crimea, etc. Just as we have legit interests in Canada and Mexico. Think about Chinese or Russian subs in Baja California Sea of Cortez.

Russia continues to support Arab states as well as the front-line states arrayed agin the Jewish State. So what? Russia needs allies. Russia needs Arabs to cooperate in oil production.

Want Russia to ally with China???

Trump is triangulated for his Russia tilt…. by neocons, Jew Media, Dem Party (funded by Jews) and GOP swampers. I guess that is a quartet.

Tucker is blowing his whistle real hard on China but….the Ruskies are still coming!. Our whole Dem Party brigades of quarreling mobs of Negroes, communists, beaners, Jews, antifas, and now chinks too…sign-up with the Jew Power. (With a few exceptions amongst the communists,). They nevertheless hate Trump and his White Peasantry too. Real Intersectionality!

Hey Tucker! It’s the Jews man! I know your act ….you fake it, I can tell . You have squeezed in a few hints that you know it’s the Jews. The Jew Greenwald you have had on and asked him what the hell is going on in the Middle East…he says Riyadh and Tel-Aviv. Tucker Knows…..a couple days ago he threw the 50 years of school failure of you-know-who at his Dem Jew interlocutor, Hahn…man do I hate that prick.

So it gets funnier. The Dems are baying like hound dogs for blood…Saudi blood for the murder of whats his name. This should make the Jews nervous…not good for the jews to have Saudi Arabia go down . So maybe Mueller will get wind of a Russian plot to false flag the whole Khashoggi deal. Trump did it cuz he actually hates the jews

So, 9-11, the JFK job, the Liberty, the Jew Bomb, Palestine flipping, Holocaust narratives, you name it…nothing to compare with the lastest…Gettting into a War with Russia. But…Jews R our friends.

As somebody said with regard to Vietnam…hot damn!

    Joe Webb.

The death of this warmongering rag is a positively good thing, except insofar as it served as a monument to Jewish hypocrisy and double standards- thus as an eminent exemplar of Judeo supremacism- in an era wherein international justice is a joke. Julius Streicher was executed for far less at Nuremberg than what these warmongering tribalists have conjured up and been cheerleaders for.

One of them just penned an article over at TAC. It’s a vapid – disingenuous – piece attacking populist critics of the current liberal Ruling Class; apparently, the democratic system that has allowed such push back is a problem that needs to be fixed these days. To their credit, it was ripped apart in the comment section. I definitely get the feeling that some of these neoliberal, faux conservative RINOs are pinning for new jobs. Personally, I think they should just drop the act and become democrats. I’d rather they not undermine the few good sources of news left with their presence.

Nothing wrong with a little self interest. Jewish Supremacy is a fine ambition, if your a Jew. Hypocrisy and double standards are just maneuvering techniques in the furtherance of that ambition.

Scholarly Christians have a vested interest in Jewish Supremacy because God is a Jew. That explains the inordinate support for Jewish Supremacy among western Christians.

Somebody has to be Supreme. It might as well be those who have the most experience and are best at being Supreme. Much like the choice between Trump and Hillary. Somebody has to run things.

How Brooks was allowed to continue to pontificate as an impartial observer about the situation in the Mideast when his son was serving on active duty in the Israeli Defense Forces (yes, a foreign army) truly shows just how corrupt the New York Times and PBS truly are.

OK, here’s my angle. The Weekly Standard died because it was redundant, and no longer needed.

The Weekly Standard was a totally corrupt NeoLiberal Rag dedicated to parroting the party line. Cheap-labor open-borders immigration, sell-out trade agreements, wasting trillions on endless pointless winless wars while starving the domestic economy of investment, wailing that Social Security and ‘entitlements’ are killing us while championing the funneling of tens of trillions of dollars in direct and indirect public subsidies and bailouts to Wall Street…

But the thing is, most corporate news rooms also parrot these lines. The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, CBS, etc.etc.etc.

So why pay for un-needed redundant capacity?

I predict that as the corporate news media continues to consolidate, that there will be an ongoing massive cull of journalists. Because if they are no longer going to do the hard work of investigating, if they are just going to take their corporate and government press releases, rearrange the paragraphs a bit, and print it, you don’t need a whole lot of staff for that now do you?

I don’t like the idea of this, mind you, but confess to a certain guilty pleasure at the prospect of so many go-along-to-get-along journalists ending up n the trash heap that they helped create…
