I’ve been to Mali, in the early 2000’s, and actually did find it remarkably law-abiding. Even in the capital city Bamako, there was no concern about pick-pocketing and you could leave valuables unattended. I always felt safe walking around the city even at night. This is not the case at all in other nearby African cities like Dakar, Senegal and Lagos, Nigeria. People in the rural areas in Mali were extremely friendly and non-threatening also.

I even went to Timbuktu which was totally stable and peaceful at the time, but it was taken over by Islamists a year or two ago. The name of these groups is not the greatest problem. The problem with Christianity nowadays is that it’s been almost completely co-opted. My stopover in Helsinki between St Petersburg and Rome a few years ago was constrained by the terms of my round the world ticket to 24 hours but it was fascinating in many ways. One was the thoughts prompted by a museum exhibition focused on the early 20th century in what was then part of the Czar’s domain as The Grand Duchy of Finland. How, I put to you and Jeppo does that Russian rule and influence fit in with the Swedish rule and influence?

It must have been the quintessence of provincialism 100 years ago. I recall reading in the museum exhibition that exhibitions had come from Moscow and St Petersburg of Kandinsky and Chagall and that not one sold though it later appeared that two paintings by, I think, Chagall never went home to the Russian dealers. One wonders whether some attention had been diverted to events on the Somme, or maybe in Galicia. It was, after all, July 1916.

Well almost every white person knows about Odin and many speak some English. It was probably chosen for maximum publicity ability. I admit I haven’t read all the comments. Maybe someone else has already mentioned this, but Finland was ruled over by Sweden for a long time, and their population is very Swedish, genetically speaking. So yes, they ARE Germanic.

Uralic may include Dravidian (Tamil) and Japanese as well as Finnish and Estonian. Similar in grammar and agglutinative use of morphemes. Most likely language isolates surviving the expansion of Indo-European and Turko-Mongolic families throughout central Asia.

You don’t know what a language isolate is.

The Germanic contacts there are older than Swedish or Old Norse.

But having such contacts or even much more recent contacts doesn’t mean adopting a Germanic identity. Think of the Irish especially, but also Czech etc.

I try to answer your question, although art history is not my strong suit. Finnish national movement had by the beginning of 20th century already been divided into two currents: so called “Constitutionalists”(perustuslailliset) and “Old Finns”(vanhasuomalaiset). For the Constitutionalists the most important goal was to preserve old, originally Swedish legal system of autonomous Grand Duchy and take part in passive (and sometimes active) resistance against the “Russification” policy. The Old Finns were willing to cooperate with the Russian central government for the goal of total Fennification of the Finnish society. So, for the “Constitutionalists” the main problem was the Russian central government and its Russification policy and for the Old Finns the remaining vestiges of former Swedish domination.

Therefore Finnish nationalist artists – famous examples being Jean Sibelius, Eliel Saarinen, Eino Leino, I.K. Inha, Pekka Halonen, and Akseli Gallen-Kallela – whether they were politically “Constitutionalists” or ” Old Finns” tried to find some cultural models that were neither Russian nor Swedish. On the one hand, they turned to Continental Europe and its new artistic movements (many of them spent much time in Paris, Berlin, Vienna and Italy). On the other hand they were fascinated by Finnish mythology, Kalevala and Finnish coutryside. Also Eastern Karelia was an important inspiration for them. Eastern Karelia was seen as place where primitive and “original” Finnish (or rather Finnic) culture had survived for centuries “untainted” by European influences. Many of them made journeys, almost like “pilgrimages”, to Karelia and Eastern parts of Finland.

I think the notion that Scandinavians are coddled is a bit naive. I’ve spent perhaps 1/5th of my adult life there. My view is that the liberal welfare state is simply a reaction by the plebs to an extremely arrogant landowning upper class. Indeed, Swedes are quite hard on each other regardless of class. They are spoiled in the sense that they can count on a roof over their head and food. However, they can also count, most of them, on feeling isolated and sneered at. Most Swedes, in my experience, long to be envied. This, perhaps, because they’ve spent so much of their life envying others. Swedes themselves often enough refer to theirs as an envy culture. To be Avundsjuk is a common illness. At the same time they realize envy brings nemesis. The appropriate indicator of a Scandinavian’s social health is this: Do they appear to feel smug? If so, so good.

Well, I admit to exaggeration. I am trying to make some point, and accentuating different things, is a kind of place keeping method. I guess to make comments, is something one does ”on the run”, so, it may be ok, not to go through further stages of proof reading and editing etc.

But above, I was harboring a nagging sense that what makes the scands, and northern Europeans stand out, is there homogenous sameness and cultural exclusiveness.

So, to shed that exclusion, and open up the gates to not just all of Europe, but to North Africa, and not just the ”trickle” that has been already a good ”pour”, but open the flood gates, and officially, openly concertedly.

Your Swedes will have more to feel insecure about than that silly navel gazing type of thing you mention. There tidy quaint towns will be overflowing with homeless illiterate scamps. They’ve been raping and murdering for decades under the eyes of all.

Just keep in mind we Americans don’t see a fraction of what goes on Europe. The media, here and there covers up everything they can for the narrative they share.

These Sons of Odin get press because the media thinks they set a bad example for anti-invasion forces, They don’t but the media isn’t as smart as it thinks.

Even in this lockdown stories still get out though and from what I’ve read there is a tremendous amount of action against the invaders, far more than we ever have in the US.

Also re: Odinism. Why not? Christianity is not native to Europe and while its older forms were warlike and mighty, the current forms are the source of the rot. Christianity is a dying ideology in Europe and if Odinism or whatever heathenish thing gives people a the forms of faith and a bit of backbone, why not?

The native Finnish faith also provides spiritual substance for some though its less warlike save for Turisas (like the band) the war god

The group calls themselves Soldiers of Odin, not “Sons of Odin.” They’ve founded chapters all over Scandanavia & Germany, have founded several chapters in France, Hungary, and even one in Brussels- and they now have 2 chapters in stogy, polite Canada (Regina and Vancouver!) Do a google on “Soldiers of Odin USA” if you’d like to get an eyeful of how big they are in the United States already.

English has become the world lingua franca, and it’s actually a very practical move for the organization to use English on their gear. Watch these guys. They’re far more serious, far more organized, and far more popular, than is being reported by the namby-pamby liberal media who wish they would go away.

I think this is developing into a grassroots movement much like the Brexit/Trump/Le Pen electoral shifts.
