The strange thing about the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939 was that it did not take place simultaneously with the German one. Stalin waited two weeks to send in the Red Army from the east. The USSR invasion from the east is hardly mentioned at all. After ten or so years of hype about Teslas and other electric cars, what we’ve got that except for the fancy bells and whistles is a fancy golf cart that is still a niche vehicle. I’m not going to belabor the point about the disadvantages about the Tesla, but their limitations really compound themselves when you are towing anything and in cold climates. The best compromise is a hybrid vehicle, which have been almost universally adopted by taxi services in North America due to their reliability. A hybrid vehicle has the best of both worlds, of gas/diesel and electric.

The hybrid might be good for city driving. For the rural population it’s not much use. The focus should be on drive-train durability and easy maintenance, which rules out putting all these batteries and electric motors into every single automobile.

Actually, the Molotov-Ribbentrop non-aggression pact was a rule, rather than an exception in the pre-WW2 European politics. USSR was the last to sign such agreement with the German Reich. Where to start. Ah yes supercaps. THey were a technology that was going to drastically alter electric cars, as the charge density is hundreds of times higher than (gasp) chemical storage such as lithium-ion, etc. batteries (which aren’t new they’re just more commonly used now). THis was on the horizon in 2000-02 and in the electronics development circuit people (closely tied to the military industrial complex…) were very excited. Capacitors generally hold charge for a second or less, now there was tech holding it there for months. So you could conceivably replace a gastank with a bank of supercaps, no larger than the glovebox. Also as they’re in parallel you could charge up the bank in seconds with a large enough supply, and unlike batteries there’d be no performance curve on the way down – you would simply use them up in sequence until all 10,000 or whatever were expended.

Know what happened next? The smartphone “revolution.” Suddenly the gigantic mining and chemical industries stood to lose that 30% surcharge that we all give them every time we buy a new phone. So that technology disappeared. As a LOT of technologies seem to by the way.

Hey I know exactly the strengths and weaknesses of these so-called “modern” batteries – I worked at a company which used old-style led-acid battery banks to charge up with a generator and solar panels (another scam but let’s stick to one scam at a time here) so it could light drilling rig sites at night and only run 3 or four charge cycles.

When I was hired they had an old fleet of ~100 led acids and 30 new light tower trailers, with a modern battery bank of eight cells that would go over 3V (I think, memory spotty) to around 24V. The guy who designed the system had previously worked at Macdonald’s, yet designed the boards and wrote the firmware. He had a single-pole contactor which when closed had 300+amps running through to the bank from the generator. One loose connection would result in sparks, so a few (10%) would go to the field and just basically start on fire. I went through the fleet and fixed the wiring issues. BUT what remained was still a problem, if the customer ran it out of fuel the only thing supplying the heater for the battery box was a 12V led acid battery which of course didn’t last forever. Last I heard the engineers (it took two engineers to design a second rev of the guy the hired from macdonald’s – ah modern engineering) took my advice and put in a “catastrophic failure” message to the data coming back through the satellite datalink.

When lithium-ion batteries are in the cold they die and are DEAD JUNK. Not recoverable.

The newer lithium ion batteries ran one cycle less per night, and were actually less money to replace (about $5000 old compared to $4000 for the newer). However the catastrophic failures including fires and simply dying in the cold in my opinion outweighed the very-marginal benefits of 20% more efficient. In fact in terms of dollars it was either a wash or a detriment. But they look neat and have green stickers. If success is measured by theft then we lost unit #10 to a farmer who tried to sell it at auction for $15,000 (it’s worth $90,000+).

And honestly, if you used the modern programming on the old battery bank style skids, they would probably run as efficiently as they ran on a timer and not battery bank voltage (which also would swell the led acid batteries up like balloons if they kept running).

That EV range is ever growing, that batteries are ever improving, with new types being produced in numerous countries. And ‘range anxiety’ is a laugh in a civilized country like China, because they set up charging stations everywhere, many now topped by solar PV, so they need not be attached to the grid.

The batteries themselves being chemical cells are at or near their theoretical limits. What’s improved is efficiency of the process they run, things like duty cycle.

“Range anxiety” is the least of the issues, automation and outside control are the things to worry on.

How much greenhouse emissions from the solar panel mining and production? Oh yeah it’s actually a wash which is indicated in the price. You cannot buy solar panels anywhere which DO NOT have a government subsidy or other discount because that’s the only way they “pay off.” They actually cost more resources / energy to make than they ever return, which is why they can never be “cost effective” – they will drain more from society then they produce.

That’s not to say “solar” is bad. “Solar electric panels” are the scam and we have been force-fed this narrative and technology, but it wears out in 4 or 5 years and just becomes junk. The thing to use is water in tubes like big radiators, sucking up the sun’s energy and heating a boiler which will then turn a turbine (as per nuclear for example). That is a system that is being used here and there and has true potential, proven on the small scale to heat houses even in the winter in cold places like Pennsylvania (Make Magazine 1st Q 2007 I think). Why don’t the greenie wheenies turn to that? Or small scale farmer style nuclear reactors using thorium?
