The comparisons to Germany and Japan are interesting in two ways because both are wildly different colonial experiences.

1) Japan – has been called the only non-white not-colonized nation. Essentially 2 factors: They’re tough fuckers who possibly had firearms just by osmosis before even the Portuguese showed up (may be close on the timing), and there’s no resources on that archipelago worth stealing anyway. The historical oddity of never being conquered certainly fed into their national sense of invincibility.

2) Germany is almost a polar opposite. It was a minor, and late colonial power. And it arrived with a big chip on its shoulder. A lot of people think that England and France fought constantly – and looking back over centuries of time it can appear that way. The fact is they agreed on a lot – including keeping the Germans divided and at odds with each other. Germany’s major divides are partly geographical and partly religious / cultural – Catholic Bavaria is always going to be different than the Protestant North or the Polish East. Even today the East/West Germany difference appears from space, at night, like North and South Korea! The place still bears scars of the 16th, 17th, 18th, most of the 19th century and the English and French policy of Divided Germany. Well eventually it came together and revenge always appears historically as overkill.

3) China falls in the middle. If you ask the Chinese, then their “century of humiliation” still haunts them today. Yes they lost the opium wars, yes they lost territory, yes they lost control of their trade.
