China’s irresponsive stance has undermined its naval military pretensions of power, so yesterday its foreign ministry finally urged Houthis to cease such “harassment” of civilian vessels.

Whereas most countries did not care much about the long-running military conflict between the Houthis and Saudia Arabia in the past, ever since the rebels have repeatedly threatened international shipping, under the false guise of only preventing ships from heading for Israeli ports, the Houthis have provoked universal opposition. Consequently, they now have hardly any support, except from some self-styled radical terrorist sympathizers.

Surely some ships that were prevented from heading through the Red Sea were also carrying containers with vital medication and food, to be unloaded at Port Said, at the northern end of the Suez Canal, from where they would then be transported by truck, intended for the population of Gaza. Though BRICS countries incur greater economic harm from the Houthi threats to the disruption of commercial shipping than the US does, realizing this may be part of a slow learning process for these slow movers.

Not necessarily. According to article 37 in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas, international passage through straits is regulated. Ships and aircraft enjoy the right soley for the purpose of continuous and expeditious transit through the strait, twhich shall not be impeded. This also applies through straits that are even more narrow, for instance, past Istanbul and Copenhagen.

So the attack on oil installations in Saudi Arabia ended the war in Yemen? Perhaps. Another possibility is what happened later when the Chinese mended relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia resulting in renewed diplomatic relations and public visits.

The United States has three main goals in Yemen:

To eliminate an ally of Iran. (The Houthis)
To control critical shipping lanes in the Red Sea.
To construct an oil pipeline across Yemen in the event that the US launches a war on Iran and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted.
