When they’re hungry enough to expend the energy, Bald eagles easily catch even some flying birds, like the Starling in the image, a species that is apparently either too stupid to evade the eagle or too stupid to recognize the Bald eagle as a threat, but you can be sure the the Bald eagle’s menu is long and varied.

Starlings are not native to N. America and are displacing native Red-headed woodpeckers and Bluebirds from their nesting cavities, and Starlings and the non-native English sparrow both played a big role in the decline of the Eastern bluebird after some idiots released the Eurasian starling in New York in the 1890, so here’s a big hooray for Bald Eagles!

Back in northern Illinois, my (then) wife and I had a house built. We engaged the services of a guy who grew, sold and transplanted trees. He had a college degree in biology but found that he could make more money in the tree business.

I was at his tree farm, looking over which evergreens I wanted, when I heard some loud noises. I found out that this guy’s dad raised peregrine falcons and gyrfalcons. He took me over to the nests so that I could look at the birds. The birds did NOT like visitors!

At a different house, I had a couple of tall antenna towers for my ham radio hobby. One tower, which was 85′ tall, had a stack of large antennas on it and the other tower, being 130′ tall, had only one large antenna on it. Occasionally a red-tailed hawk would perch on the tall tower, all by himself. It would stay up there for long periods of time, just looking over the countryside.

The shorter tower with the stack of antennas attracted turkey vultures. One day there were 17 turkey vultures perched on the antennas. They were HUGE and heavy birds. They would sometimes move the elements of one of the antennas, so that the elements would not be parallel to the ground. I had a very long driveway there, with trees that grew on the lot line. Many times I would walk down the driveway and there would be a lot of turkey vultures perched in those trees, talking over the day’s business.

Unlike red-tailed hawks, which are loners, turkey vultures are very sociable birds and enjoy hanging out with each other.

I had forgotten all about those neutron bombs we first heard about back in the Reagan days, I didn’t think that any of them were actually produced. Anyways, this commenter was talking about a genuine nuclear bomb being used in Lebanon, a bomb which hasn’t been used, and then only twice, since it was dropped on two Japanese cities in August of 1945.
